First Two Mobile Sportsbooks Apply For Licensure In Ohio

Written By Brett Gibbons on June 24, 2022

The first two Ohio sportsbooks have applied for licensure in the Buckeye State: BetMGM and PointsBet. According to the Ohio Casino Control Commission’s (OCCC) report on license applications, these are the first two mobile sportsbooks to apply.

BetMGM was technically the first, submitting their application on June 15 and followed by PointsBet’s application the following day. This kicks off a process of applications of up to 30 mobile sportsbooks in Ohio between now and the launch of Ohio legal sports betting on Jan. 1, 2023.

Ohio sportsbooks apply for license

According to HB29, which was passed in December, sportsbooks must apply for a license to operate in Ohio. There are three types of licenses given:

  • Type A: Website or mobile online wagering
  • Type B: Retail or in-person wagering
  • Type C: Self-service or host facility

BetMGM applied for both a management services provider and a mobile management services provider licenses. These licenses are on the route to getting a Type B and Type A license, respectively. PointsBet applied only for a mobile management services provider license.

Plenty more books will submit their applications this summer. Expected operators include Caesars Sportsbook (who has a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers) and BallyBet (who has a deal with the Cleveland Browns). BetMGM already has a foothold in Ohio, operating at MGM Northfield Park near Akron.

What’s next for the Buckeye State?

The OCCC confirmed that Jan. 1 would be the official launch date of sports betting in Ohio. The remainder of the summer will be spent collecting sportsbook applications and approving licenses. The books will then have until launch date to get setup in the state. They have until July 15 to apply if they intend to launch by Jan. 1. This will give us a clear picture of the operators in the state.

While football fans in the Buckeye State will have to sit tight for most of the NFL and college football seasons, residents can look forward to betting on Super Bowl 57 and the College Football National Championship game.
