FanDuel Sportsbook Ontario Security Lapse

This week, some users of one of the most prominent entrants into the Ontario legal sports betting market – FanDuel Sportsbook – have reported some issues with unauthorized access to accounts.

Here we have all the information we know as of now so that FanDuel Sportsbook Ontario users can know what happened and what it means for them.

What Happened?

Last weekend, FanDuel Ontario had 8 hours of planned maintenance of their sportsbook operations, after occasional reliability errors at high traffic times, such as during Saturday night NHL hockey and high-profile UFC nights.

After a pair of nights where their system meant that some people couldn’t access their accounts for periods of time, and right before Week 1 of the NFL Season, FanDuel shut down their sportsbook for 8 hours last weekend after the end of Week 1 of College Football.

Then, on Wednesday, the site was once again down, this time for unplanned maintenance, which lasted most of the day Wednesday and for some users, up to Thursday.

What’s The Problem?

As FanDuel explained themselves on Twitter, there was an issue with the change over security system that affected users who signed in during a small window before Wednesday’s outage.

As FanDuel explains, some users had access to multiple account information, although there’s no indication that any people have lost any money from this. Some people had cash withdrawn from their accounts to their bank accounts that they didn’t withdraw themselves.

FanDuel requires withdrawals to be made from the same system that deposits came from, so people with access to other accounts, fortunately, can’t withdraw others’ cash to their bank accounts, and there is every indication that people’s money is safe.

So far, FanDuel has been mum on the number of people who have been affected, other than saying that it was a small number – and there has been no widespread contact with users, only those affected.

What Does It Mean?

FanDuel has had a decidedly bumpy ride in Ontario so far, with ill timed outages at the same time as user promotions have been available, which has angered players.

Outages have been more numerous than with other books, and their user communication has been inadequate – problems that the planned outage last week was presumably supposed to fix, but which merely exacerbated their problems.

Hopefully, they’ll be able to fix these problems soon, or the Ontario regulatory board might have to get involved – especially with the risk of personal details being exposed. Fortunately, the legalization of sports betting gives users that protection that didn’t exist in the old days of the betting grey market.

That said, there’s still no reason to think any money was compromised, but this story will continue to unfold over the coming days.
