Morning Line Odds
1. More Than Looks (4-1)
Excellent betting odds for a horse that came from far back to nip Nagirroc, whom he’ll face here, in the $250,000 Manila Stakes.
Set up by a hot pace but still needed thunderous move under Johnny Velazquez to get up. Johnny V is back on him. Has a tendency to start slow. If he does, he will need another big pace to run at.
2. Bat Flip (8-1)
Summons visions of a home-run trot. Rounded the bases sharply to win the $120,000 Central Park Stakes last year at Aqueduct. Prevailed at 9-2 over 7-5 favorite General Jim, who he will face today. Major step up, but enters in good form.
3. Apprise (10-1)
Still a maiden, as connections have raced him in stakes company his entire career. Has only hit the board once and looks to be in the wrong spot. Must go up in class and stretch from seven furlongs. One of three horses entered by Four-Time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown. Mischievous Angel and Carl Spackler are also in this group. The Brown angle and Flavien Prat in the irons will generate some support.
4. Ocean View (15-1)
Has not inspired much confidence with overseas efforts. Steps up and his longest shot on the board.
5. Mischievous Angel (10-1)
Won debut in style, with six-furlong dash of 1:08.74. Another Brown prodigy. Could become a special horse, but is winning a $500,000 event in his second time out too tall a task?
6. General Jim (6-1)
Beaten by Bat Flip in the 2022 Central Park. Was his race to win until Bat Flip overhauled him late. Came back to win the Pat Day Mile this year. Fringes of contention.
7. Nagirroc (9-2)
Perhaps the ultimate Fan Duel Race of the Day horse. You want coverage across the board to get a free bet? He is 8-for-8 in the money. Set a track record in winning the James Murphy stakes at Pimlico. Was then out finished by More Than Looks in the Manila Stakes. Suffered from a speed duel. A horse bettors often like to key.
8. Mysterious Night (10-1)
Aptly named. Looked awesome in the Grade 1 Summer Stakes last September in Woodbine. Destroyed a field that includes Appraise, the 3 horse here. But than ran well off the board in two subsequent races. You get good connections with trainer Charles Appleby and jockey Javier Castellano, who won the Kentucky Derby with Mage and the Belmont Stakes with Arcangelo. Some bettors will throw some curiosity money at this now under-achiever. What if he wakes up?
9. Behind Enemy Lines (12-1)
A not terrible sixth in the $500,000 American Turf Stakes on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs. Captured second in the $400,000 Penn Mile. Steadily improving.
10. Carl Spackler (9-2)
Gets betting love via Chad Brown. Looked ready to take over the American Stakes race but fizzled and ran out of the money. Gets distance relief here, going back to 1 mile.
My Win Bet For FanDuel Race of The Day Promo
No. 7 Nagirroc. If he gets in a duel, More Than Looks, among others, will probably run him down. Maybe he won’t this time. In the James Murphy, he got a nice stalking trip. In making this pick, you’d have to figure trainer Graham Motion has issued explicit orders for Manny Franco to run a different style than in the last race. I may trust this angle ahead of More Than Looks getting the duel he needs to rescue a slow start.
My Other Betting Considerations
Distance relief gives No. 10 Carl Spackler a chance to stay in it. No. 9 Behind Enemy Lines is on an uptick and should be played in some tickets.
New Yorkers love Chad Brown. See whether they back his horses, who have much to prove.
No. 8 Mysterious Night has to get a couple bucks from me. Why would Charles Appleby enter a horse that’s gone off form? His Summer Stakes form would trample this field.
My Other Bets
$2 exacta box (1,7): Nagirroc and More Than Looks might both be coming late and hit the board; $4 ticket cost
$1 trifecta box (1,6,7): In case General Jim runs well; $6 ticket cost
Superfecta key and partial wheel: Fun stab – key the 7 first and second with 1,8,9,10 (Nagirroc with More Than Looks, Mysterious Night, Behind Enemy Lines and Spackler). He must finish in one of the first two spots, with the others filling out the rest of the ticket; ticket cost is $4.80 for every 10-cent superfecta ticket.
Best of luck with the FanDuel promo and your other horse racing wagers.
