The game of golf is growing and extending its global reach. Following the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo that featured 60 golfers representing 35 countries, the PGA TOUR and European Tour are combining to grow the game further through a Strategic Alliance and collaboration between the two tours. A partial, joint European PGA TOUR schedule will be the byproduct of that alliance.

“When we announced the Strategic Alliance at the end of last year, we said it was a landmark moment for global golf’s ecosystem that would benefit all members of both Tours,” European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley said in Tuesday’s joint press release.

“Today’s announcement underlines that promise, with further enhancements to the Genesis Scottish Open, a strengthening of the Irish Open for our members, and direct access for European Tour members to two PGA TOUR events.”

For bettors, this will create stronger fields and markets for some of the tournaments that were previously afterthoughts on the annual golf schedule.

Joint 2021-22 European PGA TOUR Schedule and Changes

The PGA TOUR released its 2021-22 season schedule, and there will be more playing opportunities for members of both tours starting next season.

Three co-sanctioned events were added to the PGA TOUR schedule in 2022, and each tournament will offer points towards both the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup and the European Tour’s Race to Dubai next season.

  • Scottish Open (July 7-10)
  • Barbasol Championship (July 7-10)
  • Barracuda Championship (July 14-17)

The Scottish Open field, with new title sponsor Genesis, will be split between both tours. The golf course will be announced at a later date, but the event will be played a week before next year’s 150th Open Championship at St. Andrewsthe home of golf.

The two other co-sanctioned events will provide access for 50 European Tour members. The Barbasol Championship will be played on the Champions Course at Keene Trace Golf Club in Kentucky just 12 miles south of Lexington. The Barbasol tournament will play opposite the Scottish Open starting July 7.

The Barracuda Championship will be played opposite the British Open starting July 14. The event is played at Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood) in Truckee, CA bordering Nevada and just 12 miles to beautiful Lake Tahoe.

In addition, the 2022 Irish Open will nearly double its purse to $6 million. The event is held June 30-July 3 at The Renaissance Club along the coastline of the Firth of Forth in North Berwick, Scotland. The tournament will draw more top golfers from the PGA TOUR and greater betting interest with its larger purse a week ahead of the Scottish Open.

FedExCup Playoffs Changes

The FedExCup Playoffs are big money events that also draw significant golf betting interest. This week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational will be moved into the opening tournament slot of the FedExCup Playoffs Aug. 11-14, 2022. TPC Southwind will remain the host course in Memphis for the future FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The South Course at Wilmington Country Club will host the second playoff event in Delaware for the BMW Championship Aug. 18-21. Then the top-30 players remaining in the FedExCup Standings will shoot for the $15 million top prize in the Tour Championship Aug. 25-28 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The final leg of the FedExCup Playoffs will award seven players more than $1.2 million with each of the 30 golfers earning at least $400,000.

Additional Key Golf Events and Betting Interests

The 43rd Ryder Cup Matches will be held in the United States on September 24-26, 2021, on the Straits course at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. The U.S. Team Captain is Steve Stricker.

With the WGC-FedEx St. Jude event now part of the FedExCup Playoffs, there will be only two World Golf Championship events. The WGCHSBC Champions will be held Oct. 28-31, 2021 at Sheshan Golf Club in China. The WGCDell Match Play is March 24-27, 2022 at Austin Country Club in Texas.

Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC hosts the 2022 Presidents Cup Sept. 19-25. The U.S. Captain is Davis Love III.

The Wells Fargo Championship (May 5-8) will move from Quail Hollow and be contested for one year at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Maryland.

Following a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, the RBC Canadian Open returns to the Tour schedule June 9-12. The event is held at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto, and is the lead-in event to the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, MA.

The betting and interest in the NFL is bolstered by an extra game and week in the 2021 NFL schedule. The NFL regular season concludes Jan. 9, 2022 followed by the playoffs. The PGA TOUR has flipped the scheduled events with the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California moved up to Feb. 3-6. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is moved back to Feb. 10-13 so that the Tour’s annual Phoenix stop can end on Super Bowl Sunday.
