The Word On Epicenter

May 1: “He’s a wonderful individual,” says Hall of Fame trainer Steven Asmussen in an April 10 media update. “He came in highly recommended and has always been impressive physically. He’s done well in his development and continues to improve as the races get longer.”

Epicenter completed his final major Derby prep Saturday, posting a 1:01 five-furlong time on a track described as “muddy.” Working with Alejandro, “Epicenter produced fractions of :12.60, :24.40, :36.20, :48.40 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.80,” according to Sunday’s presser.

May 3: Trainer Steve Asmussen: “It matches his favorite colors (referring to the Asmussen’s barn color and saddle towel color of blue). Like any race, you want to get away nicely from the gate and go from there. How long he stands in there, how long it takes to load, 150,000 people staring at him – it’s a lot. Joel is very confident in rhythm of the horse. So, if he is away cleanly Joel will let him be who he is.”

Betting insight from Dave Bontempo

It’s possible this is the Kentucky Derby favorite when the gate opens May 7. Epicenter has bloomed throughout the winter-spring season.

In the Lecomte, Call Me Midnight barely passed him at the wire, but Epicenter rallied and came on strong through the stretch to win the Risen Star Stakes at 7-2. He went wire-to-wire to beat 2-1 favorite Smile Happy.

In the Louisiana Derby, he was the 4-5 favorite. His jockey parked on the rail behind early pacesetters and moved into the middle of the track, driving to the finish line.

It was a seasoned run at 1 3/16 miles. Note that he looked strong at the end of this race. No Kentucky Derby horse has run 1/4 miles, but Epicenter will require the shortest stretch-out having already run 9 1/2 furlongs in Louisiana.

A Beyer Speed Figure of 102 in that Louisiana Derby win will definitely get bettors attention too.
