Duke Basketball Odds

Among Saturday’s college basketball odds, No. 9 Duke is stationed as a favorite at Florida State. Thus, the Seminoles are hefty underdogs to win straight up. Will the Blue Devils cover the point spread? Let’s delve into Duke basketball odds vs. FSU, including valuable metrics and matchups to hone in on.

Duke Basketball odds: spread, moneyline, total

The Tar Heel State announced North Carolina sportsbooks will go live on March 11 — right in time for March Madness odds.

Assessing Duke’s Defense

Much has been made of the Blue Devils’ 10th-rated offensive efficiency (via Haslametrics), especially with Jared McCain’s emergence. But they remain a peculiar case study at the other end.

Despite lacking a legitimate shot blocker, Jon Scheyer’s team allows 28.4 points in the paint per contest (per CBB Analytics). That ranks in the 81st percentile, which is certainly a fine grade. However, they’ve scuffled against traditional bigs, like UNC’s Armando Bacot, who tallied 16 points near the rim in their lone meeting on Feb. 3.

The ‘Noles have been reliant on their interior scoring, but they don’t have a traditional low-post center. In turn, they’ve utilized the 18th-most pick-and-roll sets in the country. Generally speaking, Duke defends them at a high level.

Conversely, Blue Devils can get into trouble if their opponent catches fire from behind the arc. Overall, they’ve yielded an above-average 3-point attempt rate. Generally speaking, Leonard Hamilton’s crew doesn’t generate much from that department. Nevertheless, Hamilton has schemed for it in certain matchups, such as both games against the aforementioned Tar Heels. FSU combined for 48 perimeter attempts in those matchups, by far its highest total versus league opponents.

If marksman Darin Green & Co. catches fire, the ‘Noles may hang around within a couple of possessions — if not win outright.

Utilizing Power Ratings

Per my college basketball power rankings, my raw numbers sit out a spread closer to Duke -5. Similarly, Haslametrics approximated a final score of 79.3-73.2, favoring Duke basketball odds.

Erik Haslam, who runs the analytics site Haslametrics, will return to Outside Shots once conference tournaments tip off. TheLines.com’s managing editor Stephen Andress co-hosts with me to discuss the weekend slate and betting odds. Catch this week’s episode below.
