As I noted in my college basketball futures guide, I bet on Auburn to win the national title shortly after last season ended. The Tigers’ potency around the rim was the core reason. It’s propelled them to an undefeated start, including the Maui Invitational championship.
The 6-foot-10, 240-pound Johni Broome, priced atop the odds to win the Wooden Award at +125, is shooting 83.3% at the rim (via CBB Analytics). His team has surrendered 0.94 points per possession in the same vicinity, ranking in the 97th percentile.
However, Bruce Pearl’s group may undergo some regression in its first true road test. Pearl’s flex offense is predicated around off-ball movement and cutting action, which the Blue Devils have defended well. The Tigers have also generated a 45% clip on open catch-and-shoot 3-pointers, an unsustainable percentage long-term. They benefited heavily from the soft rims in Maui.
Conversely, Duke owns a 32.7% clip on those unguarded looks. Five-star freshmen Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel are at the forefront of their shooting woes. Although their inexperience has undoubtedly played a role in marquee matchups, highlighted by losses to Kansas and Kentucky, those shots should start to fall.
Don’t be surprised if it occurs against Auburn’s drop coverage, which aims to prevent clean shots in the paint while sacrificing uncontested jumpers from behind the arc.
