DraftKings Sportsbook Explains Key World Cup Soccer Betting Rule

After months of preparation and nervous waiting, the 2022 FIFA World Cup has already featured some great highlights on the pitch. History has already been made on many fronts, including the first time fans across the United States can wager on the world’s most popular sporting event. But how popular are DraftKings World Cup odds in the midst of American football season?

Johnny Avello, the Director of Sportsbook Operations for DraftKings, is expecting group stage games to draw substantially more handle than games in the Premier League on weekends or even Champions Leagues matches during the week. However, he is hesitant about the number of games happening in the morning and early afternoon hours for American viewers, like the USA vs. England Black Friday game.

“I’m not exactly sure about Sunday morning going up against the NFL,” he said. “But when we get to some of the other games, the US playing England on Friday, I think these games will certainly out-handle Champions League games.”

Moving the tournament away from its traditional window may limit the hype around the World Cup and Avello said he believes it will adversely affect handle for the event. However, a study DraftKings conducted with Alchemer shows about 90% of fans will watch the games with over a third backing a team besides the United States.

To Avello, fans watching equals fans betting.

“When I first heard they were moving this to November, I said, ‘Well, it’s probably going to take a hit over the normal World Cup action.’ But maybe not. The way the games are positioned, there’s not much going on Monday morning, Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning, they’re all pretty dead this time of the year. You’re only going up against football on the weekends. During the week, I think it will do as well as it would have done in the summer.”

World Cup Betting 101: Know The Soccer House Rules

Avello expects the most money to come in on the knockout round games. Like all major sportsbooks, DraftKings World Cup betting rules grade the three-way moneyline on regulation time results – 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Added extra time doesn’t count, unlike almost every other sport offered.

For instance, when the United States beat Mexico in the Nations League Final last year, that was a goal in extra time. They did so again in the 1-0 Gold Cup Final. Both of those were graded “draws” by the books on the 3-way moneyline, as those bets are only for 90 minutes.

“We try to make the customers aware of that,” Avello said, noting the group stage games will not feature extra time. “People need to know that the 90 minutes, there’s a three-way bet for that. If you’re looking for a team to win that match, you need to look for the advancement. This has been an issue for novice soccer bettors and we try to educate them, but I hope that they would do a little research themselves.”

DK Monitors For Unusual Betting Activity

Betting scandals continue to dog international soccer, and while it seems unlikely one would happen during the World Cup, Avello said his team is prepared. If they see suspicious patterns for a game, he said they will pull that game off the board and existing bets would be voided.
