One year ago, the Supreme Court issued a decision with an end result best encapsulated by one word – freedom.
More specifically, the May 14, 2018 eradication of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) gave any state outside of Nevada the green light to consider the implementation of legalized, single-game sports betting – among a host of other sports-based wagering options — for the first time.
To commemorate the first anniversary of that game-changing event, DraftKings Sportsbook is making a notable proclamation of its own – it’s declaring Tuesday, May 14, 2019 as “Free To Bet Day” for its New Jersey customers.
Free wagers in the Garden State
As per its official press release, DK Sportsbook is awarding $514,000 in total giveaways to Garden State bettors in the form of a free $5.14 bet, plus hourly special odds boosts.
To qualify, New Jersey residents simply need to access their existing mobile DK Sportsbook accounts. Those who’ve yet to create one can begin the process by downloading the DK Sportsbook app to either their iOS or Android device.
“The Supreme Court’s decision led to a crucial period of rapid growth and development at DraftKings, including our first-to-market launch in New Jersey, but none of our success in this first year of legalized betting would have been possible without our incredible customers,” said CEO and co-founder, Jason Robins. “Free to Bet Day is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to all our customers who have helped make DraftKings an integral part of American sports history and innovation, and with their passion and support we could not be more hopeful for what the future holds.”
DK decisive, aggressive since entering sports betting space
DK began positioning itself for a potential favorable SCOTUS decision in Murphy vs. NCAA approximately a half-year ahead of the announcement the highest court in the land would even agree to hear the case.
The company subsequently created and filled a Head of Sportsbook position in February 2018, approximately three months before the SCOTUS rendered its PASPA decision.
Then, shortly after PASPA went by the wayside, company co-founder Matt Kalish made DK’s goal to become “number one in sportsbook” publicly known in a Facebook Live chat.
The company has made impressive strides toward fulfilling that designation. DK Sportsbook has already passed the 17 million-bet mark despite its limited nationwide market penetration. It has paid out over half a billion dollars in winnings as well and currently boasts a 90 percent retention rate according to its official announcement.
In addition to physical sportsbook locations at Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City and Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi, DK also has established relationships with the following retail partners:
- Del Lago Resort & Casino (New York)
- Hollywood Casino (West Virginia, through an agreement with Penn National Gaming)
- Caesars Entertainment (Nevada, multi-year, multi-state agreement)
