As the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) continues to deliberate the next steps for the Massachusetts launch, DraftKings is steadily preparing. The titular sportsbook is headquartered in Boston and is expected to gain both retail and online sports betting licenses in the Bay State.

The sportsbook opened its doors to Boston 25 News, discussing sports betting, the upcoming market, and why the launch is good for Massachusetts.

DraftKings Massachusetts Sportsbook Incoming

DraftKings has been at the forefront of the sports betting efforts in Massachusetts every step of the way. Reps from DraftKings spoke at a recent panel with the MGC discussing the rules surrounding temporary licenses and applications.

The Boston-based operator believes that sports betting in the Bay State is a major win for residents. The market should bring in a lot of positives to Massachusetts including jobs and revenue.

“I think this will be a game changer for people, just like really cutting out that piece of the thing where you have to drive maybe an hour to get to a market that actually has sports betting,” said Matt Kalish, DraftKings President and Co-Founder.

“Now being in our backyard, I think it’ll be tremendously, you know, easy and great for everyone. It was always a little strange to be operating out of Massachusetts where we couldn’t offer the platform.”

Massachusetts is projected to be a major player in the sports betting industry going forward. The American Gaming Association indicates that gross gaming revenue in the Bay State is $1.02 billion without sports betting.

Massachusetts is home to several storied sports franchises such as the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Boston Bruins. The market itself could see upwards of $100 million in revenue within the first year.

DraftKings is looking to take on a giant market share within its home state. The popular online sportsbook is already preparing how it will bring betting to the market from day one despite no approved licenses being issued or a launch date.

“Will Mac Jones throw for over 217 yards? Or will he have more than 1.5 touchdowns, rushing yards, all these different on-field events, you can predict real time,” said Kalish. And that’s resulted in 1000′s and 1000′s of options for players on the site. So we’ll be bringing that to Mass. on day one.”

When Will Sports Betting Launch?

It is still unknown when sports betting in Massachusetts will go live as lawmakers continue to deliberate on the details of applications and licenses. Even DraftKings CEO Matt Kalish, who has been working closely with the gaming commission, is unaware of even a timetable for the launch.

“If I knew that, I wouldn’t be working at the company taking the bets, I’d be like making them, right?” said Kalish when asked of the launch date.

DraftKings alongside several more sportsbooks continues to await their official betting licenses from the MGC. Hopefully, the commission can give some clarity in the coming weeks.
