Knicks Favorites To Land Mitchell

According to Shams Charania and Tony Jones of The Athletic, the Knicks and Jazz are “engaged in trade talks.” Utah reportedly has talked with multiple teams, one of which may be the Miami Heat, but the Knicks have “emerged as the focused destination over the past several days.”

Utah desires draft picks and the Knicks have plenty of them. New York currently has eight first-round picks in future drafts, four of which belonged to other teams. According to the report, the Knicks also have multiple players the Jazz may want to acquire.

Of course, Mitchell is the needle-mover here. The three-time All-Star averaged 25.9 points per game while shooting 35.5% from 3 in 2021. It’s the second consecutive season which Mitchell averaged at least 25 points per game and shot at least 35% from beyond the arc.

Per the odds, here is each team’s implied probability to land Mitchell (vig included):

  • Knicks 66.7%
  • Heat 20%
  • Jazz 15.4%
  • Nets 9.1%
  • Lakers 5.3%

Mitchell Odds Shift Moves Knicks Futures As Well

Landing someone as high-profile as Mitchell would impact futures markets. Before the report, New York had +10000 longshot odds to win the 2023 NBA Finals. That number dived to +6600, but will continue to move as the situation develops.

Those odds still stand ninth in the Eastern Conference near teams like the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Knicks finished six games outside the play-in in 2022, 11th overall in the East.

Since 2013, the Knicks have landed in the postseason once (2021, when they were eliminated in five games to the Hawks in the opening round). They last appeared in an NBA Finals in 1999.
