Did the Chiefs cover the spread

This year marks the second year in a row in which Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs entered the Super Bowl as underdogs. The point spread at top sports betting sites opened at Chiefs +2.5 and the line stayed in the +1.5 to +2.5 range in the two weeks leading up to SB 58 kickoff. Did the Chiefs cover the spread on Sunday night against the 49ers? We will deliver the betting results and potential Chiefs Super Bowl payouts as soon as it is learned.

Now that the game has kicked off at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, KC spread ticket holders are holding on tightly to those betslips wondering if the Chiefs have covered the spread, or even better, won the game outright.

Below, we take a closer look at how underdogs have fared overall.

Update: By defeating the 49ers 25-22 in OT, the Chiefs covered the Super Bowl 58 spread with an outright victory. Kansas City trailed San Francisco 19-16 with 1:53 remaining in regulation. Then in overtime, the Chiefs trailed 22-19 with 7:22 to play in OT. KC covered the spread by scoring the game-winning TD with just three seconds remaining.

Did the Chiefs cover the spread?

Since the Super Bowl usually pits the top two remaining NFL teams, underdogs have typically been getting +1.5 to +5 points.

This year marks the fourth time in five seasons that Kansas City is representing the AFC in the Big Game. In SB 57, they were a +1.5 underdog versus the Philadelphia Eagles but ended up winning the game outright, 38-35. Chiefs covered.

Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay was a different story as Kansas City was a -3 favorite versus Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. The Chiefs failed to cover in this one, losing the game 31-9.

Then there's SB LIV between the Chiefs and 49ers in which Kansas City was a -1.5 favorite. It ended up being a KC cover as a result of their 31-20 victory.

However, Super Bowl XLII between the New York Giants and New England Patriots was G-Men +12. This one goes back to the 2008 season when the Pats went 16-0 during the regular season. Big Blue ended up winning this one outright, 17-14, covering the double-digit spread in the process.

Even with the recent success of underdogs covering, overall, the favorites still hold a slight 29-25-2 ATS advantage. The overall result does not include the 2015 game which was a pick'em.

The table below provides a recap of the last 15 Super Bowl final scores, including how the underdog fared ATS.
