DID THE 49ers COVER THE SPREAD?

With the top two NFL teams facing one another in the Super Bowl, favorites typically see point spreads in the -1.5 to -5 points range.

Looking back at recent SB results, all of which the number has been -5 or less, tickets on the favorites have lost more than they have cashed, including the previous three Big Games. Super Bowl LIV between the 49ers and Chiefs is the last time a favorite covered the line. Kansas City (-1.5) won the game 31-20.

When talking about SB history overall through 2023, however, favorites covering hold a slight 29-26-2 ATS advantage. The overall result does not include the 2015 game which was a pick’em.

Since the 49ers are playing in the Big Game this year, it’s worth noting the franchise is still the biggest favorite to cover the number. The Niners were an 18.5-point SB XXIX (1995) favorite over the Chargers and easily covered via a 49-26 victory.

The table below provides a recap of the last 15 Super Bowl final scores, including how the favorite fared ATS.

status of SUPER BOWL 59 futures

Top sports betting sites wasted little time posting the Super Bowl 59 market. The wild card is that the odds will continue shifting as teams make roster adjustments once free agency and the NFL Draft roll around. The San Francisco 49ers (+550), Kansas City Chiefs (+850), Baltimore Ravens (+900), and Buffalo Bills (+950) are among the early favorites. As of now, the books are giving the Carolina Panthers (+20000) the longest odds.

There is still a very long wait until SB 59 takes place on February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome – home of the New Orleans Saints.

Up next is the 2024 NFL Draft taking place in Detroit, Michigan starting on Thursday, April 25 and wrapping up on Saturday, April 27. NFL Draft odds are currently available for limited markets, with additional ones expected closer to the spring. Top sports betting sites have posted odds for the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks, team to draft Caleb Williams and more.
