Why MIght Deebo Samuel Be Traded?

In 2024, Samuel had his least productive season since his 2021 breakout. Despite the void left by Brandon Aiyuk’s knee injury, Samuel produced just 670 receiving yards in 15 contests. His 40.7% success rate was miles below his prior career low (47.9%).

Samuel was likely unhappy with his role, and the rift appears to go both ways. Bay Area reporter Tim Kawakami reported that the 49ers were displeased with Samuel’s weight. The positionally ambiguous weapon certainly looked like he possessed a lessened burst.

Trading Samuel isn’t an attractive option for the 49ers, as they’d be on the hook for $31 million in dead cap. According to ESPN’s reporting, a release is still a possibility. That would spread the dead cap over the next two seasons.

Can 49ers Retain Samuel Despite Trade Request?

All of that means a reunion could still be in the cards here. In fact, that’s the most likely scenario according to the DK odds.

There is precedent for this between the two sides. Samuel previously requested a trade when he was unhappy with his prior contract. The two sides subsequently worked out a lucrative extension.

Given how poor the other options look for the 49ers, placating Samuel might once again be their best bet. The WR corps looks muddled for 2025. First-round pick Ricky Pearsall might be ready to take over, but he hasn’t proven anything yet. Jauan Jennings has stepped up and produced in the past, but always in smaller doses/roles. Aiyuk suffered a devastating knee injury. How much effectiveness will he lose?

Trading Samuel may wind up as a last resort for the 49ers.

Market Expects Steelers, Broncos To Remain On Hunt For WR Help

If Samuel does get dealt, some of the top teams in odds to acquire Cooper Kupp are also atop the odds board for Samuel.

The market views the Steelers and Broncos as the top receiver-thirsty teams. They both have weak talent at the position and want to win now.

Samuel himself mentioned Denver as an attractive destination while making a media appearance. A separate report said Samuel and his agency are also interested in landing in Pittsburgh. However, the Steelers don’t even know who their QB will be yet, so investing heavily elsewhere doesn’t make a ton of sense before that.

The Commanders and Patriots also look like fits as teams looking to support promising QBs on rookie deals.

Bettors looking for a longer shot could consider the Texans. They have a very thin WR room with Stefon Diggs hitting free agency and Tank Dell recovering from another devastating late-season injury. Newly hired offensive coordinator Nick Caley comes from the same coaching tree that turned Samuel into a star.

The sticking point here is that Houston is slightly over the projected cap, per OverTheCap. It would need to make some moves to free up salary.
