Lakers Dan Hurley

Dan Hurley will not be taking the position as the Los Angeles Lakers’ next head coach. Hurley turned down the six-year, $70 million Lakers offer to return as the UCONN Huskies head coach.

Prior to reporting that Hurley was the Lakers’ first choice, JJ Reddick was the betting favorite to land the job. When the reports of Dan Hurley and the Lakers began to gain steam, sportsbooks like DraftKings removed the Lakers Next Coach betting market altogether. Now that Hurley is no longer an option, Reddick returns as the betting favorite. With some reporting now saying Hurley was never a realistic option for LA.

This Lakers coaching search saga has been all over the place. However, what can be learned here is that betting fans should always be cautious when wagering. Even news reporting can lead to losses.

Why JJ Reddick Was The Early Favorite For Lakers Job

NBA betting fans were quick to back the idea of JJ Reddick being the front-runner for the Lakers job. Popular NBA insider Shams Charania broke the news via his popular X account, saying that JJ was the Lakers’ primary choice for the role. What also aided the odds was that Lakers star LeBron James hosted a podcast alongside JJ.

The odds reflected this as Reddick was far and away the favorite. This reporting led to many bettors running to online sportsbooks to place action on the retired sharp shooter. Placing action on JJ Reddick at the time would have seemed like a relatively safe wager. Even with the low potential returns on JJ’s short odds, a near-certain win is an attractive market.

Dan Hurley Throws Wrench In Lakers Next Coach Betting Odds

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN and industry rival of Shams were the first to report the Lakers were meeting with Dan Hurley. In Woj’s reporting, it was being presented as if the Lakers first choice and primary want was Hurley. The way the reporting came in surrounding Hurley made it seem as if the earlier reporting of Reddick was not as strong as fans and sportsbooks were led to believe.

This raised a few questions within the industry. For starters, Shams has a partnership with FanDuel Sportsbook, and his reporting directly led to bettors wagering on JJ Reddick for the Lakers job. This isn’t the first time the public gave backlash to Shams after his reporting affected betting lines.

During the 2023 NBA Draft, Shams reported heavily on Scoot Henderson going No. 2 overall to the Charlotte Hornets, only for Charlotte to draft Brandon Miller. Similar fan outcry surrounding Shams and his FanDuel partnership came following the Hurley reports. Hurley was not even listed on any odds boards prior to the news.

With Hurley Out, Reddick Returns As Favorite

With the news that Hurley will not be taking the Lakers head coaching position, sportsbooks see JJ Reddick return as the favorite. Reddick now sits with -500 odds at sportsbooks for the position.

However, there has also been some reporting that people around the league doubt Reddick would still be interested in the Lakers.

“Some folks around the league feel J.J. Redick won’t want to be involved with this circus and that he won’t want to be a second choice, but he wants to coach,” said Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports.

The JJ Reddick/Dan Hurley/Los Angeles Lakers saga shows that bettors cannot simply rely on reporting when betting. There is no such thing as a sure bet. Even with all the information in the world, a wager can result in a loss. When betting, always be prepared for the risk behind every wager.
