The Word On Crown Pride

May 1: via Derby Media presser: “Crown Pride (JPN) jogged in the mile chute for 10 minutes and then galloped a mile and a quarter under exercise rider Masa Matsuda. Crown Pride is scheduled to have his final pre-Derby work on Wednesday. Trainer Koichi Shintani is scheduled to arrive in Louisville late [Sunday.]”

May 3: Trainer Koichi Shintani: “We’re very happy with lucky number seven. And the Derby is on May 7.”

Betting insight from Dave Bontempo

UAE Derby winners have yet to establish themselves at Churchill Downs, but Crown Pride’s win there should be respected. The race was a 1 3/16 miles and, like the Louisiana Derby, it’s the closest distance to the Kentucky Derby a horse can get (1 1/4 miles).

Crown Pride had a well-executed stalker strategy in the UAE Derby, sitting on the coattails of Summer is Tomorrow right from the start. With just a little over 100 yards left, Crown Pride overtook Summer is Tomorrow for the noteworthy victory.
