Now that the Eagles have been crowned Super Bowl champs, it’s time for all 32 NFL teams to shift their focus to the offseason. Why Are The Rams Trading Cooper Kupp?

Kupp is under contract for two more years. And at roughly $30 million, then $27 million, he isn’t cheap.

All else being equal, the team would prefer to keep Kupp, a franchise legend who once finished third in MVP voting and then won a Super Bowl MVP award. The Rams have cap space, with Over The Cap ranking them 13th in effective space at about $35 million.

However, the franchise is at a crossroads, with quarterback Matthew Stafford’s status in limbo heading into his age-37 season. Puka Nacua has clearly surpassed Kupp as the top playmaker. Spending $30 million a year on a 32-year-old WR2 doesn’t make a lot of financial sense, especially so with the team transitioning to a younger core on defense, with several budding stars in line to get paid soon.

Making Kupp a cap casualty isn’t a great option, either. He has a dead cap hit of more than $22 million.

That leaves a trade as the most logical course of action. The Keenan Allen trade has been mentioned as an analogous situation. That makes sense, as both players are former stars who built their games primarily on intermediate route-running and are now transitioning into supporting roles. Allen fetched a fourth-rounder before 2024.

No Clear Favorite To Land Kupp

As the odds above show, no clear favorite exists to land Kupp. A cluster of six teams has similar single-digit odds.

The Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers sit atop that list. Both teams had solid 2024 campaigns, but both have receiving corps built almost entirely around one player (Courtland Sutton, George Pickens). Giving their QBs (whoever he may be in Pittsburgh’s case) a more well-rounded group of targets rates as a top priority for both teams.

Both teams have similar amounts of cap space to the Rams.

When Kupp became available, many pundits immediately mentioned the Commanders and Patriots. It’s not hard to see why.

Both teams have gobs of cap space, especially the Patriots (No. 1 per OTC). Both teams have young QBs who need support to continue to develop. New England probably had the worst receiving corps in the NFL in 2024. Washington relied too heavily on Terry McLaurin.

Chiefs, Lions Among Teams Of Note In Cooper Kupp Odds

Two teams that would raise an eyebrow if they acquired Kupp are the Chiefs and Lions. Both are among the strongest contenders in early Super Bowl odds, and if they can find a way to acquire Kupp, they could add even more firepower.

The Chiefs are losing DeAndre Hopkins and Hollywood Brown to free agency. They could use a veteran route runner to mentor Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy and possibly replace Travis Kelce’s intermediate-area production.

However, they’re slightly over the projected cap and would need to make some moves to free up salary.

The Lions have the space to absorb Kupp’s salary. However, they must decide whether that space is better spent shoring up a defense repeatedly shredded down the stretch.

Further down the odds board, other teams to watch might be the Jaguars (+3500) and Bengals (+2500). Both received mentions from NFL.com reporters covering the Kupp market. Kupp would fit nicely into the slot for Jacksonville if it decides to cut Christian Kirk. Cincinnati won’t be a fit if it chooses to appease Joe Burrow and bring back Tee Higgins. However, if the Bengals opt to shift those resources to their woeful defense, Kupp could represent a cheaper WR2 option.

Either team may make sense as a longshot punt in this betting market.
