Cooper Flagg Wins NBA Rookie of the Year After Tight Race With Kon Knueppel
In what was one of the most competitive NBA Rookie of the Year races in recent history, Monday night brought the official announcement that Dallas Mavericks star Cooper Flagg had won the award over Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel.
By a slim margin, Flagg took home the honor after receiving 56 first-place votes, while Knueppel earned 44 first-place votes of his own. The final voting reflected just how close this race really was, with Flagg narrowly edging Knueppel after both put together phenomenal rookie campaigns and quickly established themselves as two of the brightest young players in the league.
With the award, Flagg joins Jason Kidd in 1994-95 and Luka Dončić in 2018-19 as the only Mavericks players to win NBA Rookie of the Year. He also became the first rookie since Michael Jordan to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals, which only further highlights how impressive his all-around season really was.
And because he just turned 19 during the season, Flagg is now the second-youngest player to ever win the award, behind only LeBron James.
That is what makes this result so notable. Flagg entered the NBA with enormous expectations and ultimately lived up to them, but this was far from a runaway victory. Knueppel made a real push for the award and forced this into a legitimate two-player race all the way to the finish line.
The Mavericks’ season may already be over, but with a cornerstone like Flagg, this feels like just the beginning. He projects as a generational talent with impact on both ends of the floor, and this award is simply the latest reminder that Dallas has found a player it can build around for a long time. That's why the NBA Draft is so important, as that's where teams find their future.
