The Miami Hurricanes have been the one team seemingly immune from college football chaos in 2026. But has that had more to do with them, or their weak ACC schedule? This matchup should give the answer, as they visit the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a rematch of last year’s opener. The Irish fell just short against the Hurricanes a year ago, and that proved the difference when Miami made the playoff and Notre Dame sat and watched. The Fighting Irish have plenty on the line here, as their schedule hasn’t been anywhere near up to par. Notre Dame has played one tough opponent this year in BYU, and a loss in that game leaves the Irish on the brink. We review our Miami vs. Notre Dame prediction, break down the odds of this Top Ten contest and provide our picks for this game.

It’s rare for the top team in the nation to come in as an underdog. It’s even rarer for them to come in with the pressure clearly on their opponents.

The simple fact is, Miami does not have to win this game. Barring a monumental collapse, the Hurricanes will play to win their first ACC football championship next month, which comes with an automatic bid to the College Football Playoff. The Hurricanes probably wouldn’t need it anyway, but it’s there if they do.

Notre Dame has an automatic bid available to it, too. But it’s tied to the Irish’s ranking. They have to finish in the top 12 to get a spot, and they’re hanging out on the precipice at No. 11. To make matters worse, the Irish have no good wins to their name. If they don’t beat Miami, SMU is the only team left on the schedule who even qualifies as decent.

The Irish can’t go before the selection committee with the best thing on their resume being a win over Wisconsin. It’s now or never for Notre Dame.

Miami vs. Notre Dame Odds

The public believes that the lines have overreacted to Miami losing wide receiver Malachi Toney. The line started at -5.5 for the Irish, then jumped to -7.5 when Toney’s absence was revealed. But the line has come back to +7, and it could slip under the critical number. The public is heavy on the Hurricanes; 81% of tickets have come in on the visitors.

Notre Dame has won three straight against Miami in South Bend. But the only recent meeting came in 2016, a 30-27 victory for the Irish. Two of the past three meetings have been decided by exactly three points.

Here’s a breakdown of the lines, with the best odds coming at Caesars.

These numbers indicate expectations for a higher-scoring game. Both offenses have been outstanding this year; Notre Dame scoring just 24 against BYU is the only time in either’s past five games that they’ve been held under 30 points. The oddsmakers believe Notre Dame is about 4 points better than Notre Dame on a neutral field. The implied probability of this game says Miami has a 31% chance to win the game. That’s better than expected for underdogs, if you’re betting the moneyline.

Miami has one big question: Can it handle playing without Malachi Toney? The Hurricanes’ wideout got injured in practice, and he won’t be on the field for this one. That changes the equation for the Hurricanes, but it shouldn’t stop them.

Darian Mensah has thrown for 25 touchdowns on the season against a single interception. Toney has 13 of those touchdowns, but that means 12 have gone to other receivers. Having Toney on the field certainly makes life easier for Miami, but the Hurricanes have enough weapons to survive without him.

The ground game might have to become a bigger weapon than it has been in previous games. Miami showed it could run the ball on its march to the final last season, and it still has Mark Fletcher Jr. to keep drives moving. That might prove critical to maintaining their attack.

Notre Dame spreads the ball around far more often than Miami does. The Fighting Irish rely on C.J. Carr to make good decisions with the football, which has almost always been the case. Carr has thrown 18 touchdowns against one interception, and the mistake didn’t make much of a difference in a rout of Purdue.

The question with the Irish is whether they can move the ball well against a good team. BYU is the only top opponent they’ve seen all year, and that resulted in their lowest scoring total of the season. Carr did throw for 261 yards that game, but Notre Dame had to have him throw 49 times to keep up with the Cougars.

That isn’t where the Irish really want to be. They’ll try to establish the run a bit more in this game and hope to lean on a more balanced attack.

Miami vs. Notre Dame Prediction: Miami +7 (-105)

Miami is more than just Toney. The Hurricanes put up points like nobody’s business, and they have always managed to find a way to hang around. Since 2023, Miami has now played 41 straight games where it has either won or kept the margin of defeat to less than seven points.

That includes last year’s title game against Indiana, where the Hurricanes took the Hoosiers’ best punch and still had a chance to win at the end. Miami knows how to handle close games because it has done it so many times. Even when it’s not at its best, the Hurricanes find a way to keep things close and get the job done for their bettors.

Miami looks like it’s getting too many points against an unproven Notre Dame.
