Arizona vs. Texas Tech Prediction, Odds & Picks for Oct. 31: Wildcats Soar Past Red Raiders

The Arizona Wildcats weren’t expected to be in the race for the Big 12 title, but after five straight victories, they’re right in the thick of things. The Texas Tech Red Raiders were supposed to waltz to the Big 12 championship game, but after a loss at Cincinnati, their glide path has become a bumpy ride. With a loss here, Texas Tech might have no path back to the league title, as they won’t see any of the league’s top teams. But they face a sack-happy defense that has been improving by the week, as well as one of the best offenses in the Big 12. We review our Arizona vs. Texas Tech prediction, break down the odds of this contest and provide our picks for this game.
Before the season started, few people would have expected this game to affect the Big 12 race. Arizona seemed a step below the contenders in the league, and was too heavily dependent on forcing turnovers. But after a slow start against BYU, the Wildcats have hit their stride. Arizona has only allowed one of its seven opponents to break 24 points, and that came after the Wildcats already scored 52 of their own.
Texas Tech got its first real test of the year, and the Red Raiders couldn’t handle it. The same Cincinnati team that Arizona beat by 27 in the desert outplayed and outdisciplined Texas Tech, which turned the ball over three times and committed 13 penalties. Texas Tech plays a high-risk, high-reward style, attempting to force opponents into mistakes.
But the Red Raiders make far too many of their own. They haven’t been able to trust their quarterback, and they’ve gotten away with it because of their weak schedule. Texas Tech still has a mostly soft schedule that it can count on, but it has to survive this game to take advantage of it.
And that appears a tall task, because Arizona has been getting better each week and has had success away from home. If the Wildcats aren’t intimidated by going to Lubbock, they’ve got a chance to completely change the conference race.
Arizona vs. Texas Tech Odds
The public believes in the Wildcats. The line has moved four points since it went on the board, dropping from -7.5 to -3.5. The public is still sticking with Arizona, as 53% of tickets have come in on the visitors. Part of that could be going off of league performances, as Texas Tech hasn’t looked its best against the conference.
There’s no recent history between the teams. Texas Tech and Arizona were once league rivals, but that ended when the Red Raiders joined the Southwest Conference in 1957. The teams have only met twice in the past 35 years, and they’ve split those two meetings. Texas Tech is 11-5-1 ATS as a home favorite in conference games since 2021.
Arizona has just one win all-time in Lubbock. Granted, they haven’t played in Lubbock since 1989, and the win came in 1935. All-time, the Wildcats are 1-13-1 at Texas Tech.
Here’s a breakdown of the lines, with the best odds coming at BetMGM.
- Spread: Arizona +3.5 (-108) / Texas Tech -3.5 (-112)
- Moneyline: Arizona (+145) / Texas Tech (-175)
- Total (Over/Under): Over 54.5 (-110) / Under 54.5 (-108)
These numbers indicate expectations for a higher-scoring game. Both defenses play an aggressive style of football, with Arizona going for the sack and Texas Tech trying to force interceptions. That can work either way, as the big-play style can lead to big plays for either side. The implied probability of this game says Arizona has a 40.8% chance to win the game. That’s a fair amount better than expected for underdogs, especially on the road. If you’re betting the moneyline, this could be a value play.

- Arizona is 4-1 ATS in its past five conference road games.
- The under is 7-1 in Arizona’s past eight Big 12 games.
- The Wildcats are 6-1 ATS in their past seven league games.
- The over is 5-3 in Arizona’s past eight road games.
Arizona barely bothered with the ground game last time out, because it didn’t have to. The Wildcats’ passing attack has been outstanding, as Noah Fifita has emerged as one of the best passers in the country. Arizona’s aerial attack ranks second in the Big 12, as it and Oklahoma State are the only league teams averaging more than 300 yards per game through the air.
The Wildcats’ offensive line, however, isn’t the greatest. Arizona plays a risky game, as Fifita has been sacked 17 times this season. The Wildcats tend to trust him to make a play happen, as they don’t really trust their ground game or their line play.
In this game, that’s probably the right move. Texas Tech’s run defense has been better than its pass defense, as the Red Raiders look to make something happen rather than settle for a stop. Only Cincinnati and West Virginia have allowed more passing yards in the Big 12 than Texas Tech, and Fifita shredded both of them for five touchdowns against two interceptions.
In short, this is a quick-strike team that needs to start fast. When the Wildcats start well, they’re tough to stop. When they don’t get a quick score, they struggle to play their game.
Texas Tech Betting Trends
- The over is 5-1 in Texas Tech’s past six games.
- The Red Raiders are 2-2 ATS at home this season.
- Texas Tech is 11-3 ATS in its past 14 conference games.
- The over is 3-1 in Lubbock this season.
When your defense has more than twice as many interceptions as your quarterback has touchdown passes, it either means you’ve got an aggressive secondary or you can’t trust your passer.
In Texas Tech’s case, it’s both. The Red Raiders have not been comfortable all year with Will Hammond at quarterback, but they haven’t got any better options available. Instead, they tend to ask Hammond to simply not lose the game for them.
For the most part, that worked until last week. Cincinnati dared Hammond to beat them, and he couldn’t do it. Hammond’s 37 throws were easily the most he’s attempted all year, as the game slipped away from Texas Tech. Arizona might try a similar strategy, as it has a better defense than Cincinnati does.
Above all, Texas Tech needs to thwart that by getting J’Koby Williams to find space on the ground. When he breaks off a big run, Texas Tech usually controls the game. If a team keeps him to three to four yards at a time, the Red Raiders usually struggle.
Arizona vs. Texas Tech Prediction: Arizona +3.5 (-108)
The way that Texas Tech lost to Cincinnati was a warning sign, because it can be replicated. If the Red Raiders had simply played poorly, that would be one thing. But Cincinnati also struggled with turnovers, and Texas Tech couldn’t cash in on them. The Bearcats won because they controlled the ground game and forced the Red Raiders to the air.
Arizona has all of the pieces to repeat that and do it even better. Fifita is showing himself a smart, capable quarterback who can pick apart an aggressive defense. If Texas Tech is forced to press, it’s not likely to have the results it wants.
The Red Raiders have already shown they can’t force the issue on offense. Hammond is too turnover-prone to make that work, and Arizona isn’t going to give him time to read the defense. That should give the Wildcats enough of a cushion to control this game.

- Over 54.5: (-105, Caesars) – Even though Arizona’s defense has played well in recent weeks, Texas Tech’s offense is a step up from Iowa State’s. The Red Raiders will shoot themselves in the foot at times, but they can do enough to score their share of the points.
- Noah Fifita Over 254.5 Passing Yards: (-114, FanDuel) – Fifita is going to get his yards. He hasn’t had problems moving the ball against anyone in the Big 12, and Texas Tech is high-risk, high-reward on defense. The reward comes in the form of turnovers, not in stops. Fifita might throw an interception or two, but he’s also likely to throw for a long touchdown pass or two.
- J’Koby Williams Under 68.5 Rushing Yards: (-114, Caesars) – This is a dangerous play, because one run could make it happen for Williams. But Arizona is likely to try to force Hammond to do the work to beat their defense. Williams will get a few carries, but if Arizona gets an early lead, it’ll be tough for the Red Raiders to keep going to the run.
