Darian Mensah, Malachi Toney Shatter Miami Records in Blowout Win

The Miami Hurricanes, after losing in the national championship game last season, look poised to make another push for a title. And in their first game of the college football season, one of the country's most anticipated quarterback-receiver duos put on a show.

No. 7 Miami opened the season Friday night with a dominant 45-6 win over Stanford, and both quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Malachi Toney had record-breaking performances.

Mensah, making his Hurricanes debut after transferring from Duke, completed 27 of 30 passes for a career-high 401 yards and five touchdowns.

But a lot of that production came through his favorite target.

Malachi Toney Breaks Miami Receiving Record

Toney finished with 12 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns, breaking Miami's single-game receiving record of 220 yards set by Eddie Brown way back in 1984.

He also tied the program record for touchdown catches in a single game. And it all started on the first offensive play of the season, when Mensah connected with Toney for 48 yards.

There's clearly chemistry between these two players already.

Toney was a game-breaker for Miami last season, and after this performance, it looks like he may be taking another step in 2026.

Darian Mensah Makes Statement in Miami Debut

That's not to discount Mensah. Just because Toney was his go-to target doesn't take away from how phenomenal the quarterback was. Mensah made elite throws to other receivers as well and looked completely comfortable running Miami's offense.

And it was a true statement for a team that lost quarterback Carson Beck and entered the season with questions about whether it could get back to that championship level.

After Week 1, it certainly looks possible. Both Mensah and Toney have experience playing at a high level in college football, and there are significant expectations for this Miami team after coming so close to a national championship last season.

After one game, it already looks like this duo is going to lead the way. And there's probably no better way they could've come out and made a statement on Friday night.
