Week 6: Louisville Vs. Notre Dame Preview
While Sam Hartman and Audric Estime dominate headlines around Notre Dame, the Irish defense has propelled this team to 5-1 (and nearly 6-0). Outside of one 61-yard breakaway touchdown run, Notre Dame allowed just 65 rushing yards to Ohio State. Removed one 34-yard breakaway run against Duke, and they held running backs to just 3.2 yards per carry. The front seven so far has stifled opposing run games.
Jawhar Jordan managed 32 yards on 16 carries against NC State, breaking his three-game streak of 100+ rushing yards. The Irish will work to remove Jordan from the game plan and force the ball into Jack Plummer’s hands more. His go-to receiver, Jamari Thrash, goes against his most formidable opponent in preseason All-American Benjamin Morrison. Notre Dame’s secondary held the best receiver in the country, Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., to just three receptions for 32 yards.
Notre Dame this season has laid out its game plan: run the football with Estime and maintain leads with ball control. The defense is good enough to slow most opposing offenses – including holding Ohio State to just 17 points and Duke to just 14 – which may cause issues for Louisville’s scoring unit.

The Cardinals are No. 19 in my Most Deserving Rankings and No. 29 in my power ratings, with the No. 27 offense and No. 26 defense. That said, the Irish present the most difficult test for Louisville on both sides of the ball. Even though this game is in Louisville, my numbers suggest the Irish are going to be too much for the Cardinals on both sides of the ball.
Bottom line, I have Notre Dame -7, with a 31% chance Louisville improves to 6-0 on the season.

Louisville Football Odds: Best Bets
Though the market has moved the line far from its 48.5 opening mark, I lean under the point total. Notre Dame runs the 25th-slowest pace in the nation (non-service academies) and presents a severe mismatch in the run game. Louisville scored most of their points against Georgia Tech and Boston College, the 127th and 133rd-ranked EPA defenses, respectively. Louisville struggled to score against Indiana (104th) and NC State (46th).
Should the total hit 55, I’ll be betting the under. Otherwise, I’m waiting until the last minute and betting on the best total I can find.
