Week 5 delivers one of the most anticipated college football games of the season. The Georgia Bulldogs visit the Alabama Crimson Tide in what’s sure to be a top-four national matchup. Georgia opened up a -2.5 favorite over Alabama at opening odds with a point total of 49.5 points. The Bulldogs seek to avenge a loss in last year’s SEC Championship – a game that ultimately cost UGA a shot at another national championship. Georgia at Alabama kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

High-level college football doesn’t get much bigger than this. Barring personnel news, this line will move based on market action only – both teams rest on a bye week in Week 4. Georgia last traveled to Tuscaloosa in 2020, a game the Bulldogs (+5) lost, 41-24. Before then, their only trip to Bryant-Denny Stadium came in 2007 (won 26-23). Alabama leads the all-time series, 43-26-3, and has won five of the last six meetings, four of which came in the postseason.

Betting lines haven’t been the strongest indicator of this matchup in recent history. Of the last 12 meetings, favorites are just 3-9 against the spread and six times the underdog won outright. Granted, neither team is lined as a touchdown-plus favorite, leading to a higher likelihood of outright upset.

Through three games, few teams dominated like Alabama. The Tide rank fourth in net EPA with 63-0, 42-16, and 42-10 wins over Western Kentucky, USF, and Wisconsin, respectively. Aside from a bizarre three quarters against USF, Alabama has looked untouchable. The Tide went to Madison in Week 3 and dismantled Wisconsin and, prior to that, posted the steepest net success rate against WKU.

Georgia flexed its muscles in a dominant 34-3 win over Clemson in Week 1. After that, the Dawgs took care of business against FCS Tennessee Tech (but did not cover!), 48-3. The last time we saw Georgia on the field, it survived a 13-12 near upset at Kentucky. That’s not uncharacteristic of recent UGA teams; Georgia needed late-game grit against South Carolina and Auburn last year (combined 11-14 record to finish 2023) and Missouri the year prior (6-7 final record). The Bulldogs bring a 41-game regular season win streak to this contest all the same.

What do Georgia at Alabama Opening Odds mean?

Adjusted for the vigorish (at -2.5), Georgia has a 54.4% implied win rate. Sportsbooks line Alabama with a 45.6% implied probability to win the game.

College Football Look-Ahead Lines

QB Jalen Milroe made a strong case to be a Heisman Trophy odds favorite last week at Wisconsin. Not far from the top to begin the season, other names jumped Milroe in the early going. However, five total touchdowns and leading Alabama to the top passing offense in EPA through three games slashed his Week 4 odds. Young receiver Ryan Williams emerged as the alpha early on. The true freshman has four touchdowns on just 10 catches (28.5 yards per reception!).

Georgia’s defense remains one of the top units in the country, but it hasn’t been stressed yet. Milroe and Alabama’s explosive downfield passing attack is sure to push the Georgia secondary to its limits. Star pass rusher Mykel Williams missed the last two games with an ankle sprain. He has the bye week to recover, but his status for this game is important to keep an eye on.

The QB across the way, Carson Beck, struggled against Kentucky. The Wildcats do field a formidable defense, but they lack the level of talent Alabama brings to the table. Beck was pressured nine times and, although he wasn’t sacked, was held to 6.7 yards per attempt and zero touchdowns.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer extends his coaching record to a ridiculous 107-12, including 22-2 at home and 12-2 against top 25 opponents in the FBS. Kirby Smart remains the gold standard following Nick Saban’s retirement, but DeBoer doesn’t fall far down the coaching ranks.
