College Football Week 2 Look-Ahead Lines: Texas At Michigan Opening Odds
Week 2 of the college football season offers a dynamite slate with multiple blockbusters. The marquee game, though, is the No. 4 Texas Longhorns at the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines – possibly the most anticipated non-conference game of the season. Multiple sportsbooks included this in their Game of the Year menu, opening odds as early as spring. With lots of uncertainty surrounding Michigan’s QB battle, savvy bettors could take the opportunity to take a bet on the look-ahead line. Opening odds lined Texas as a -3.5 road favorite and Michigan as a +136 home underdog.

Texas was dealt a significant blow in mid-August. Star RB C.J. Baxter suffered a torn ACL and will miss the entire season. Depth piece Christian Clark also suffered a season-ending injury in camp. Presumed RB1 Jaydon Blue showed plenty of explosiveness in limited work the past couple seasons. He rushed for 6.7 yards per carry last season and was worked in to the pass game later in the year.
On the flip side, Michigan lost potential All-America safety Rod Moore to a season-ending knee injury.
The Wolverines turn most of their roster over from the 2023 championship team. Just 36% of roster production returns, fourth-fewest in the country. Most importantly, Michigan turns over much of its coaching staff, including head coach. Head coach Sherrone Moore did lead the team to big victories over Penn State and Ohio State during Jim Harbaugh’s late-season suspension, one on the road in State College.
Both Michigan and Texas are 20+ point favorites in their Week 1 games.

This line could be on the move in a hurry. Moore has not yet named a starting QB ahead of Michigan’s season opener against Fresno State. Alex Orji was the backup last year and brings a dynamic athleticism to the table. Former walk-on Davis Warren flashed in the spring game and played himself into position throughout camp. Indiana transfer Jack Tuttle is the veteran presence in the room, but has battled injury this offseason.
Likely, the competition comes down to Orji vs. Warren. Whoever wins that battle, if either do this week, and how they look against an overmatched opponent could send this line marching. For example, if either or both come out and struggle to move the ball, the line likely moves in favor of Texas. Already through the key betting figure of -3, it wouldn’t take much to move the line in Texas’ favor.
However, if one truly emerges as the QB1 and dominates against Fresno State, the line could see resistance or stay put. Moving through -3 would indicate a 17% change in implied win rate, a major shift in projection.
