Battle From Deep?

Although the Tide are unranked, both of these programs are near the top of the March Madness odds board. For reference, Tennessee is at most operators while Alabama has odds. The metrics adore Nate Oats’ perimeter-oriented attack, stationed at No. 7 overall on Haslametrics. Which team is directly behind them? Naturally, it’s the Vols.

There is certainly justification for that — both good and bad. For one, Northern Colorado transfer Dalton Knecht is seemingly healthy after playing through an ankle injury over the last six weeks. Knecht tallied 35+ points over the last two games, most recently helping Tennessee wax the slumping Florida Gators on Tuesday. Hence, the Vols’ offense has a much higher ceiling than it’s displayed throughout Rick Barnes’ tenure in Knoxville.

As for Alabama, the undefeated start in conference play isn’t as impressive as one may think. The Tide have knocked off lowly Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Missouri. Holding those opponents to a stellar 30.4% 3-point clip comes with an asterisk. Therefore, their defense could be in for a wake-up call if Knecht & Co. find the range early on.

Then again, Mark Sears & Co. boast the fifth-highest 3-point efficiency (39.7%) across D-I. Unlike their defense, Oats’ floor spacing is annually reliable. Alabama can also capitalize on Tennessee’s drop coverage with its small-ball approach, particularly via two-guard Latrell Wrightsell (45.2%) off the bench.

If that notion comes to fruition, this game is primed for a nail-biting finish. Should the Tide regress from deep, it’s a different story.

Utilizing Power Ratings

Per my college basketball power rankings, Tennessee and Alabama are separated by a hair under two points. After incorporating the home-court advantage at Thompson–Boling Arena, the Vols are somewhat overvalued, according to my raw numbers. However, the Tide’s weaker conference schedule (thus far) suggests they could be in for a rude awakening, especially if their perimeter shots aren’t falling.

Conversely, Haslametrics projects a final score of 81.3-77.9, favoring Tennessee. Erik Haslam, who owns and operates this college hoops analytics site, will make his return to Outside Shots in March.
