College Basketball Best Bets: texas A&M ATS?

After Auburn clinched the SEC regular-season crown in Saturday's win at Rupp Arena, this matchup represents an ideal buy-low, sell-high spot at Texas A&M, which returns home after dropping four straight. Considering the Tigers covered as 4.5-point favorites versus Kentucky, which I have power-rated lower than the Aggies, the opening line was inflated per my raw numbers.

If you’re unfamiliar with situational spots, they attempt to uncover conditions where teams have exceeded or underperformed their usual performance level — relative to the moneyline or point spread.

Aggies' Biggest Advantages

While the Aggies failed to cash in my ticket from Saturday's betting column, they're in line for more positive shooting variance following their blowout loss at Florida.

Since Feb. 8, Buzz Williams' squad has experienced the second-worst net 3-point clip (-9.1%) across Division I. Some bettors will view that as another chance to fade Texas A&M, but the market has already baked these outcomes into the opening point spread. Unless you believe this trend is sustainable, you aren't gaining much of an edge in that respect.

To boot, Pharrel Payne and the rest of the Aggies' frontcourt should accumulate many second-chance opportunities and free-throw attempts, thanks to the Tigers' struggles on the defensive glass.

As imposing as Auburn forward Johni Broome is at both ends, his team grades in the fifth percentile regarding the percentage of points surrendered on second-chance shots (via CBB Analytics). Up against the nation's premier offensive rebounding unit, I expect Texas A&M to take full advantage.

Injury-wise, Tigers point guard Denver Jones could miss this game after suffering an ankle injury at Kentucky. With a rematch against Alabama before the SEC tournament, Auburn may play it safe with its two-way pest.
