Kentucky Georgia Odds

On Tuesday’s college basketball odds board, the No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats head to Athens, Ga., to face the unranked Georgia Bulldogs. The Wildcats are near the front of my college basketball power rankings after their home win over Florida, with the Bulldogs on the outside looking in. Let’s dissect the odds for Kentucky at Georgia, including same-game parlay options.

With SEC play heating up, I’ve circled this game as a potential letdown spot for Kentucky. If you’re unfamiliar with situational spots, they attempt to uncover conditions in which teams have exceeded or underperformed their usual level of play — relative to the moneyline or point spread. Mark Pope’s unit is fresh off an emotional victory over the Gators, an opponent it’s designed to handle. The Bulldogs present a much different challenge stylistically.

Georgia will aim to slow the pace and limit Kentucky’s run-and-gun attack. Per Synergy, the Bulldogs’ transition defense grades in the 94th percentile on a points-per-possession (PPP) basis. ShotQuality, another analytical tool that showcases the “quality” of attempts at both ends, has Georgia ranked atop college basketball in this department.

In the Wildcats’ first loss, their half-court offense failed to do the heavy lifting against Clemson’s similarly built lineup. Led by 6-foot-11 freshman Asa Newell, the Bulldogs’ length and athleticism should disrupt Pope’s continuity ball-screen action.

Moreover, Kentucky wing Koby Brea, who owns the eighth-highest 3-point clip (52.3%) nationally, is questionable. He’s a pivotal role player in the Wildcats’ five-out system, drilling seven triples in Saturday’s win.

Conversely, Georgia is due for positive shooting regression after going 2-of-18 (11.1%) from behind the arc in its SEC opener at Ole Miss. The Bulldogs fell 63-51 but missed a handful of clean looks. Not only do the Wildcats rank well above the D-I average in open 3-point attempts allowed, but they’ve also been fortunate that their opponents have only made 28.2% of them.

I expect Mike White’s crew to keep this one close at home — if not win outright.

Update: Brea was removed from the SEC availability report this afternoon, meaning he’ll suit up for the Wildcats.
