College Basketball Best Bets: Ole Miss ATS?

If I decide to wager on a third-straight Ole Miss tilt, I may as well go down with the ship. The Rebels are searching for revenge from their first meeting on Jan. 11, which they were expected to cover per ShotQuality despite Auburn bettors cashing in.

Additionally, this game may represent a look-ahead spot, with Auburn facing Kentucky in Rupp Arena on Saturday. Situational spots uncover conditions when teams have exceeded or failed to match their typical efficiency level relative to the moneyline or point spread.

Tigers' Fortunate Defense

Was Auburn's loss to Florida on Feb. 8 possibly an indication of how the Tigers could fall short in the NCAA tournament? Even without Alijah Martin, the Gators shot 39.4% from behind the arc in a hostile environment.

While they've bounced back with four straight wins, they've failed to cover as double-digit favorites in consecutive games. To boot, those opponents (Vandy, Alabama, Arkansas, and Georgia) combined to shoot 21.4% on 3-point attempts. Outside of the Florida game, this trend is a microcosm of their season, allowing a 32.5% clip on open catch-and-shoot triples (via Synergy).

Enter Ole Miss, which runs a five-out offense that can exploit Auburn's drop coverage. Unless Chris Beard's squad is exposed on the glass from the opening tip, Malik Dia, Sean Pedulla and the rest of his floor spacers should inherit some clean looks in transition. Positive variance could also transpire after they shot a mere 28.8% on 3-pointers amid their two-game skid.

Key Injuries

Ole Miss guard Matthew Murrell, its second-leading scorer, remains on the SEC injury report with a lower-body designation. He went scoreless in 12 minutes of action during the loss at Vanderbilt. Auburn wing Chad Baker-Mazara is also questionable.

Betting on the Rebels is tricky without much information on Murrell's long-term status. Nevertheless, I'll likely take my chances with another inflated line in the Tigers' direction.

Although Auburn is vying for the SEC regular-season crown, the Rebels must avoid a late-season collapse to earn a bye for the conference tournament.
