The 2023 NCAA Championship game featured UConn and San Diego State — both programs which showcased +8000 March Madness odds in the preseason at various legal sportsbooks. Will college basketball odds in 2024 produce a similar result? Let’s take an early look at the futures market via DraftKings Sportsbook, as Duke (+1000) leads the way.

Will Blue Devils Win Another Title?

Unsurprisingly, John Scheyer’s bunch sits atop the odds board after Tyrese Proctor and Mark Mitchell, a pair of 2022 five-star pieces, announced their return. The 6-foot-5 Proctor ascended as Duke’s lead ball handler down the stretch while Mitchell provides plenty of versatility with his 6-foot-8, 220-pound frame. Kyle Fillopowski, the 2023 ACC Rookie of the Year, reportedly may even find his way back in Durham, N.C.

Proctor & Co. tallied 10 consecutive wins ahead of their second-round game versus Tennessee, in which they fell by 13 points. Defense was their calling card during that run, though, boasting the 16th-rated AdjD (KenPom).

Should Duke cuts down the nets next April, it will produce the program’s sixth national championship banner — and the first since College Basketball Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski retired after the 2022 campaign.

Kentucky (+1200), along with aforementioned UConn (+1400), follow suit. The Wildcats possess a quartet of 2023 five-star recruits entering fold, highlighted by Justin Edwards and D.J. Wagner. Meanwhile, the Huskies will bring aboard the 10th-rated prospect in combo guard Stephon Castle. They’ll also restore their budding frontcourt — with soon-to-be sophomores Donovan Clingan and Alex Karaban.

Per their preseason title odds above, UConn is the biggest longshot to win the NCAA men’s basketball title over the last 15 years. Ironically, the program’s last two national championship teams rank behind this one in that department.

Longshot To Consider

Mind you, the everlasting transfer portal makes it somewhat difficult to find early value with college basketball odds for 2024. To this point, a multitude of rosters are undetermined. That said, Tom Crean, the 21-year men’s D-I basketball head coach-turned-ESPN analyst, mentioned that Maryland (+7000) is worth monitoring ahead of next season on The Lines’ Outside Shots podcast.

“Because of their (the Terrapins’) ability to press. Because of how Kevin Willard sees the game — how he coaches the game.” Crean said.

Jahmir Young, who transferred over from Charlotte last offseason, recently noted that he’ll utilize his extra year of collegiate eligibility in College Park. He not only was the team’s leading scorer (15.3 ppg) and distributor (3.1 apg), but he re-gifts Willard with the perfect point guard for his pressure defensive structure as well.

Young will pair up with highly-touted wing DeShawn Harris-Smith. It remains unknown as to whether or not fellow senior Donta Scott will do the same as Young.

However, the Terps could very well add ex-Michigan big man Hunter Dickinson, who averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.8 blocks per game for the Wolverines as a junior. In fact, he may even be the most renowned player ever to hit the transfer portal.

Whether Dickinson winds up at Maryland or not, I put a half-unit down on Willard’s crew on Monday night.
