Purdue Boilermakers at Michigan Wolverines

These two teams squared off on Saturday, in which Matt Painter’s squad won, 82-76, despite failing to cover. But it represents a difficult spot for the Boilermakers, as they’re also coming off an emotional victory over Illinois on Tuesday.

Moreover, Michigan is fighting for its 2022 March Madness odds, sitting outside of many bracketologists’ projections. Hence, this game represents a prime motivational spot for Juwan Howard’s crew — especially after just losing to Purdue.

In the first meeting, the Wolverines’ ball-screen action picked apart the Boilermakers, as the 7-foot-1 Hunter Dickinson tallied 28 points and a pair of 3-pointers in the process. If Painter aims to adjust by doubling Dickinson on the catch, it’ll lead to more open perimeter looks for Dickinson’s teammates. Michigan already cashed in at a 44.4% clip at Purdue.

On top of that, Howard’s bunch allowed the Boilermakers to generate 11 offensive rebounds. The Wolverines, led by Dickinson and five-star freshman Moussa Diabate, possess the size to go toe-to-toe with Purdue on the glass. If Michigan improves its overall effort in that department, it’ll limit Purdue’s transition opportunities.

While Jaden Ivey & Co. present the No. 1 Adjusted Offensive Efficiency in the country, they’re even more lethal on the fast break. In particular, the 6-foot-4 Ivey is delivering a top-80 efficiency rating in transition (via ShotQuality).

Nevertheless, their aforementioned defensive issues will be the difference. The Boilermakers were overvalued as 9.5-point favorites on Saturday. If you make the adjustment with Michigan now boasting the home-court edge, the same principle applies.

Look for sharpshooter Eli Brooks and his Wolverines to hit enough 3-point shots to at least stay within a possession.
