College Basketball Best Bets: Will Davidson Continue Nation’s Longest Winning Streak?

Written By Eli Hershkovich on January 14, 2022

There are a pair of Atlantic 10 games on Friday’s college basketball slate, including Davidson at Richmond. The Wildcats are tied with Auburn for the longest winning streak (12) in the sport while showcasing their best straight-up start since the 1969-70 season. Let’s break down my college basketball best bets for that matchup.

Davidson Wildcats at Richmond Spiders

Even after losing now-Kentucky wing Kellan Grady, Bob McKillop’s five-out motion attack is tallying the 20th-ranked adjusted offensive efficiency (AdjO) in the country. Davidson has found itself in my college basketball power rankings as a result.

  • AdjO accounts for a team’s estimated offensive efficiency (on a points scored per 100 possessions basis) against the average Division I defense via college basketball prognosticator Ken Pomeroy.

But the Wildcats’ defense is the most glaring liability in this affair. McKillop utilizes some pack-line principals, aiming to limit opponents’ paint touches while conceding open perimeter looks in the process. They’re surrendering the 11th-highest three-point scoring rate overall.

Enter Chris Mooney, who runs a Princeton offense that centers around motion and ball-screens. Richmond generates its fair share of backdoor cuts and layups via their constant movement, but it’s also manufacturing the 60th-highest scoring rate from behind the arc.

Richmond struggled from three-point territory to begin conference play, combining to shoot 12-of-53 (22.6%) in losses to St. Joe’s and Saint Louis. The Spiders found more a rhythm in Wednesday’s win over UMass, and bettors should expect that to continue with their offense set up for success.

Mooney’s bunch needs every win it can muster up after a slow start to the A-10 slate. It also dropped winnable non-conference games to Utah State, Drake, Maryland and Mississippi State, so an at-large bid is out of the question. Buy-low on sharpshooter Tyler Burton & Co. in a prime situational spot.
