How Will Creighton Handle Pressure?
In the college basketball odds table above, you’ll find that Creighton is favored. For reference, the Bluejays opened -4 at numerous shops.
Greg McDermott’s team was hyped up all offseason after challenging Kansas in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. It also added North Dakota State transfer Baylor Scheierman, who gifts McDermott with another playmaker. He’s shooting 10-of-24 (41.3%) from behind the arc thus far.
Creighton’s Achilles heel was offensive miscues in 2021-22, as its turnover rate ranked No. 302 across Division I. The Bluejays have done a fine job of limiting them thus far, but they’ve yet to face a competent defense.
Enter Mark Adams’ Red Raiders. His ball pressure and no-middle structure always combines to manufacture an elite unit at that end of the court. In fact, Adams was the defensive coordinator on Chris Beard’s staff before Beard left for Texas.
There’s a certainly a chance that Ryan Nembhard, Arthur Kaluma, and Trey Alexander have refined their ball handling. However, I’m willing to bet against it in the early goings. If Texas Tech forces Creighton into more half-court sets than not, De’Vion Harmon & Co. should generate their fair share of takeaways.
Despite the Red Raiders’ poor offensive spacing, they boast a top-20 ShotQuality PPP in transition. That comes via a small sample size, yet they showcase a handful of explosive athletes, including Longhorns transfer Jaylon Tyson. They’ll get their chance to shine if the previous notion comes to fruition.
Even without Utah State Valley transfer Fardaws Aimaq, whose foot injury is expected to keep him out until February, Adams’ bunch can hang within a four-point spread.
