Alabama Crimson Tide @ Memphis Tigers

Nate Oats’ team is riding high after consecutive top-15 outright wins over Gonzaga and Houston, moving it into the top 10 in my college basketball rankings. ‘Bama is now 20-1 in the March Madness futures market.

On the flip side, Penny Hardaway’s bunch has lost four straight games — the latest against Murray State as a 10-point home favorite. But Memphis exhibited signs of life in that one, especially with its half-court defense. The Tigers extended their ball pressure for much of the first half, leading to 12 of Murray State’s 17 turnovers and transition opportunities of their own.

Nevertheless, the Racers’ controlled the pace in the final 20 minutes, generating 10 three-pointers in the process.

The Tide present an uptempo floor-spacing attack, guided by junior guard Jaden Shackelford and the 22nd-highest effective field goal percentage (eFG%) in the country. So will Hardaway’s unit be efficient enough to limit their run-and-gun offense?

  • eFG% differs from conventional field goal percentage by taking into consideration the added value of a three-pointer.

Although Memphis presents the ninth-worst turnover rate in college basketball, Alabama doesn’t showcase the most aggressive nature at that end of the floor. Moreover, the Tide are below-average in second-chance conversion percentage allowed versus the average opponent (via Haslametrics). On Saturday, Houston kept the score close by accruing 21 offensive boards in the last-second loss to Alabama.

Considering this contest represents a de facto must-win for Memphis, expect it to display plenty of energy on the glass. The Tigers possess a size advantage overall while tallying the 12th-highest offensive rebounding rate in Division I.

If Memphis’ offensive advantage comes to fruition, its press should produce its fair share of miscues. ‘Bama guards JD Davison (30.7% turnover rate) and Jahvon Quinerley (18.4%) have both struggled to minimize their mistakes.

Expect the Tigers to at least stay within a possession, and I’ll take the home underdog in the Tide’s first true road test.
