There’s reasonable doubt that Lou Anarumo’s pass defense will outperform expectations once again after surrendering a bottom-10 dropback EPA despite losing stud corner Chidobe Awuzie to a torn ACL midway through the 2022 campaign.
Keep in mind, that the Bengals benefited from squaring off against a comforting number of below-average quarterbacks last season. In total, 45% of their opponents’ dropbacks were comprised of QBs who ranked No. 30 or worse in EPA. It was the highest rate across the NFL.
Granted, Burrow, Jamar Chase, and the rest of Cincinnati’s explosive passing attack will do their part to keep the Bengals in playoff contention. They also brought tailback Joe Mixon back on a cheaper deal. However, their win total is likely a bit overvalued — unless their good fortune persists on the other side of the ball. That said, their offense has received its fair share of injury luck in the last two years as well. I’m more bullish on the Ravens’ Super Bowl Odds.
