When will Christian McCaffrey return to the field for the 49ers?
Many fantasy football owners are seeking an injury update for the 49ers RB. So when will Christian McCaffrey return and be back on the field for the 49ers?
The team is angling for a return sometime after the Week 9 bye.
Reports have indicated that McCaffrey will return to simulated practices this week to open his practice window before Week 10. If things go extremely well, he could perhaps play against the Bucs. Here’s the 49ers’ schedule for the games in which McCaffrey’s practice window would be open:
- Sunday, Nov. 10 (Week 10): 49ers at Buccaneers
- Sunday, Nov. 17 (Week 11): 49ers vs. Seahawks
- Sunday, Nov. 24 (Week 12): 49ers at Packers
Expect the 49ers to spell McCaffrey with plenty of Jordan Mason and/or rookie Isaac Guerendo, at least early on (pending Mason’s shoulder injury). Both have proven capable backs, and the 49ers will want to work McCaffrey in without overloading him and causing further injury. Fantasy owners should keep expectations somewhat tempered for his first week or two.
How long will Christian McCaffrey be out?
A sore Achilles tendon creates a rather ambiguous timeline. The team understandably took a cautious approach, wanting McCaffrey to be 100% healthy for the most important games of the season in the playoffs.
However, with the team at 4-4 heading into the bye, the season is very much in the balance now. San Francisco still has tough games against Green Bay, Buffalo, and Detroit. It already dropped a home game to Arizona, with whom it’s tied in the NFC West standings.
Again, though, the 49ers must balance urgency with the fact that McCaffrey has not proven to be a durable player in his career. This season’s absence of at least eight games will mark the fifth time in 10 seasons the talented back has failed to come close to playing a full campaign.
