Charles Schwab Challenge Odds: Final Round PGA TOUR Golf Bets

While Colonial is one of the most historic courses on the PGA TOUR and a lovely challenge for today’s professionals, the Charles Schwab Challenge has endured numerous sponsorship changes and now an unfriendly position on the schedule. That has given us a less-than-elite field, and in consequence, a less-than-stellar leaderboard heading into the final round. Still, the Charles Schwab Challenge odds board shows some intrigue heading into Sunday, and there are even some big names lurking if the course plays difficult in the final round.

Tournament Recap Through First Three Rounds

We got an interesting field at the Charles Schwab Challenge this year. With the hometown commitments from Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth along with some other high-end talent like Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland in the field, it seemed likely we’d get a household name bringing home another title on the PGA TOUR. The middle tier in the field was quite weak, so that possibility made even more sense.

Instead, Harry Hall flew through the gates on Thursday with a blistering opening-round 62 to open up a sizable lead through just 18 holes. The Englishman has been a contender on the Korn Ferry Tour, but he had yet to get much going in his rookie season outside of a solid showing at the Shriners. But as of late, he has been showing some small signs. Hall is a wonderful putter who has also been putting up some incredible numbers around the greens, so it makes sense why this challenge is a nice fit for him.

Hall joined by a couple more short-game specialists

As it usually happens, Hall has been caught by some of the field after two more rounds. Harris English was his quickest challenger on Friday as the veteran has been turning around his game of late. English had established himself as one of the better players in the world a couple years ago before injuries set him back. It’s been a tough battle back since, but a runner-up at Arnold Palmer and T3 at Wells Fargo showcased that English is finding his way, and that’s continued this week at a course he’s had plenty of success at.

Adam Schenk added his name to the hat on Saturday to give us a race that seems likely to feature three people. Schenk recently contended at Valspar before bogeying the final hole to lose by one to Taylor Moore. He’s been in contention deep into Sunday a few times in the last few years, and it feels more and more likely he’s finally ready for his first PGA TOUR victory. Schenk’s 67 was one of the best rounds on the course Saturday with a very difficult golf course. Despite being fairly long off the tee, Schenk has often found himself in contention on these shorter, more technical golf courses that put an emphasis on a hot putter.

Going into Sunday, Schenk and Hall sit tied for the lead with English one shot back. Justin Suh and Emiliano Grillo are four shots back, while players like Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler are within range but would need a magical Sunday to win.

Final Round PGA TOUR Golf Bets To Consider

Winner: Adam Schenk

Best Odds Still Available:

The three players at the top of the Charles Schwab Challenge odds board are well ahead of the rest of the field. While the guys at 5 and 6 under could make a run, it feels likely with the short-game strengths of the players at the top that they won’t falter too much. After really looking into the best angle here, it felt clear to me that the best value is for Adam Schenk to grab his first PGA TOUR title on Sunday. Schenk has been knocking on the door for quite some time now, and I don’t think at all that the moment will be too big for him.

It’s helpful that Schenk likely won’t be battling it out with a huge name. Hall and English will be comfortable opponents. Schenk sits seventh in Strokes Gained: Approach, 13th in Strokes Gained: Around the Green and seventh in Strokes Gained: Putting for the week. He also has plenty of distance with the driver and has been keeping it in play nicely this week.

Hall showed that his ball striking is too volatile to trust on Saturday. English is the man to worry about, but I actually believe in Schenk’s driver a bit more and think he’s more than capable of keeping up with English in other categories. Schenk has the finishes at courses that sit nicely with Colonial, including Shriners and John Deere. With all of their odds sitting closely together, I narrowly prefer Schenk with the extra stroke to take care of business tomorrow and get his long-awaited first win.

Top-Five Finish: Andrew Putnam

Best Odds Still Available: +700

Putnam was one of my favorite picks coming into the week, and he’s had a solid three rounds to sit in a tie for 10th heading into Sunday. While his hopes of winning are likely gone at six shots back and nine names ahead of him, Putnam is in a good spot to log another solid finish in what has been a great season for him.

As we expect from Putnam, his putter has been superb this week. He sits third in Strokes Gained: Putting with 6.73. But the rest of his game has lagged behind a bit so far despite some great ball striking over the recent couple months. That ball striking started to show its form on Saturday in what would have been a great round if he didn’t have a miserable round around the greens.

That likely won’t happen again, and if the ball striking clicks for the second straight round, Putnam only needs to make up a couple strokes for a top five. These are very juicy odds for one of the more in-form players in contention to jump a handful of spots on a very difficult golf course.

Top-10 Finish: Justin Rose

Best Odds Still Available: +230

Justin Rose currently sits in a tie for 16th through three rounds and really should be right in the thick of things when looking at his performance. After a strong T9 at the PGA last week, Rose has brought his ball striking along with him to Texas as he currently sits first in the field in approach, gaining 8.1 strokes through three rounds. Rose has also been accurate off the tee, but he’s lost a shocking 4.3 strokes on the greens. That’s been enough to take him out of contention on a week he likely could have won.

Considering Rose is an excellent putter who loves Bent greens, I wouldn’t bet on this performance to continue. Outside of the fatigue factor possibly setting in after a long PGA week, Rose is in great shape to gain just one shot and log a top 10 with these solid odds. His form is one of the best in this field behind Scheffler and Hovland, and I wouldn’t put it out of the equation that Rose could post something very low for the leaders to see if that putter gets going on Sunday.
