The 2022 Formula 1 season is officially underway as preseason testing kicks off in Barcelona. Successful testing doesn’t always mean a strong year, but Charles Leclerc F1 odds are on the move at legal online sportsbooks after he topped the timesheet on day two in Spain.

With Mercedes and Red Bull remaining relatively quiet during testing, sportsbooks are taking notice of McClaren’s and Ferrari’s encouraging performances and beginning to shift Formula 1 betting odds.

McClaren had its eyes set on two-consecutive days atop the standings during testing, but Ferrari put an end to those dreams when Charles Leclerc secured a 1:19.689 lap time. That time just beat the mark set by Lando Norris on day one by a tenth of a second. It doesn’t sound like much, but it was enough to move Charles Leclerc F1 odds.

With Lewis Hamilton seemingly taking a backseat at testing, securing the last spot on the timesheets, Ferrari and McClaren are beginning to shine.

Mercedes driver George Russell is definitely taking notice, saying, “Some teams, a red team and an orange team in particular, look very, very competitive.”

Sportsbooks are taking notice, too. Charles Leclerc F1 odds are already on the move after day two in Barcelona. The driver’s odds have shifted from +1200 before testing all the way to +600 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

His odds of winning the championship have shortened at FanDuel and BetMGM as well.

The same holds true for Norris after his impressive day one performance. The McClaren driver went from +3300 odds to win the 2022 season at BetMGM to +1400 odds.

Why Is Lewis Hamilton Still The Betting Favorite?

If Hamilton is last on the timesheets, why is he still the betting favorite?

It is hard to make performance-based predictions from the successes and struggles seen during pre-season testing.

Testing offers fans the first glimpse at the cars this season, which feature a completely new design. Teams are still working out mechanical issues and there are varying levels of effort from different teams and different drivers.

F1 testing is also not identical to grand prix conditions. One main difference is that teams can only test one car, so drivers have to share. It is also their chance to try the different Pirelli tires and run as many laps as they wish.

For example, Lando Norris secured his fastest lap on the C4 Pirelli tire. This is a soft compound tire that delivers huge peak performance but won’t last long on the track.

Most of the other drivers during testing performed best with the C3 tire, which is a more balanced tire and more commonly used during races.

Hamilton completed just 40 laps while some drivers completed double that amount. Sportsbooks aren’t going to move Hamilton from the top spot after a handful of practice laps with minimal effort.

Mercedes is known for trying to keep things close to the chest until the season actually begins.

While drivers in the middle of the pack will see their odds shift based on preseason testing performances, Verstappen and Hamilton will likely stay put until the season begins.
