Are CFP Look-Ahead Odds Worth Betting?
Theoretically, sportsbook customers must project the quarterfinal results in the College Football Playoff to gain an edge on the current spreads. Line movement also depends on injuries. At DraftKings, bet365, and FanDuel Sportsbook, bets are void if a matchup doesn’t occur.
As for No. 8 seed Ohio State, the Buckeyes came up shy of beating the top-seeded Oregon Ducks in Week 6. If Will Howard and Co. earn revenge on Wednesday, they’ll likely square off against the No. 5 Texas Longhorns in the CFP semifinals. These teams arguably boast the most talented rosters across FBS, so, unsurprisingly, the oddsmakers project another close affair.
As of this publishing, bet365 Sportsbook has the best odds for OSU to cover the point spread. Despite the Ducks’ higher seed, oddsmakers respect the Buckeyes in their power ratings, given they’re favored over the Longhorns on the look-ahead spread.
The quarterfinal duel between No. 2 Georgia and No. 7 Notre Dame has evolved into a war of attrition. Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck (elbow surgery) was ruled out for the season, and All-American nose tackle Riley Mills (knee) is also expected to miss this matchup. The Irish will presumably face a similarly constructed Penn State unit if they advance.
The No. 6 Nittany Lions present an elite defense, gobs of depth, and an explosive rushing attack. However, oddsmakers have Notre Dame as a slight favorite in this College Football Playoff semifinal tilt.
