College Football Week 8 Betting Report: Undervalued & Overvalued Teams | Analysis

We have enough data at this point in the season to identify market trends that could create value in college football Week 8 betting. Some teams have consistently outperformed sportsbook expectations, while others have struggled to cover despite strong straight-up records.
Against the spread (ATS) records don’t automatically tell us which teams to bet, but they help show how each team has performed relative to the market. The key question is whether sportsbooks are still undervaluing or overvaluing these teams, or if the current lines have already adjusted.
We’ll use several factors to evaluate that:
- ATS record
- Average cover margin
- Scoring margin
- Strength of schedule
- Recent performance
- Advanced efficiency
- Week 8 lines
ATS records are only part of the equation. They’re most useful when combined with current form, underlying performance, and the latest betting market to determine whether a team still offers value.
How We Identify Undervalued & Overvalued College Football Teams
College football ATS records help show how consistently teams have performed relative to sportsbook expectations. Straight-up records tell us who won, but ATS results can provide a better picture of whether the betting market has been too high or too low on a team.
Scoring margin and average cover margin add more context. Scoring margin measures how decisively a team is winning or losing, while cover margin shows how they’re performing relative to the spread.
Advanced metrics can help determine whether those results are sustainable. EPA/play, success rate, explosive-play rate, turnover margin, and red-zone efficiency all provide additional context beyond the final score. Strength of schedule also matters, because strong results against quality opponents generally carry more weight than against weaker competition.
Five Undervalued College Football Teams Entering Week 8
Here are five undervalued teams to consider when betting college football in Week 8.
1. BYU Cougars
- SU Record: 6-0
- ATS Record: 6-0
BYU was one of my underrated teams in Week 7, and I’m going back to the well this week. They won outright as double-digit underdogs against Notre Dame. They’ve covered in all types of games, including a -50.5 point spread, multiple double-digit spreads, single-digit spreads, and as a double-digit underdog.
The Cougars are now nearly a touchdown road favorite against UCF, which is a similar spot to their game against TCU. UCF’s performed well against the spread in 2026, but the market may still be underrating BYU, which could be because of the injury to LJ Martin.
The biggest concern for the Cougars is that star running back LJ Martin is injured and won’t play. He missed most of the game against TCU and didn’t play against Iowa State last week, though, and BYU covered in both games.
In nearly three full games without Martin, star quarterback Bear Bachmeier’s thrown for 615 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. More importantly, he’s added 220 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
2. UCLA Bruins
- SU Record: 6-0
- ATS Record: 6-0
UCLA’s consistently been one of the most underrated teams in the NCAA this season. They’re perfect against the spread, and they rank third in the country in average cover margin (+15.3 points).
There were questions about their offense last week with Nico Iamaleava injured, but they still covered the spread by nearly a touchdown. Ty Dieffenbach flashed at times, although he wasn’t elite.
Most importantly, it shows this team is much more than one player.
3. New Mexico Lobos
- SU Record: 5-1
- ATS Record: 5-1
New Mexico was a perfect 5-0 against the spread before failing to cover in a win against Hawaii last week. Still, they boast the second-highest average cover margin (+15.5) in the NCAA this season.
The Lobos quietly rank 14th in the country in explosive play rate (6.6%). They’ve also held their opponents to a low rate, ranking 11th in net explosive play rate (3.3%) this season. They’re also elite in the red zone, holding their opponents to a FBS-low 62.5% red-zone scoring rate, while boasting an elite +22.7% net red-zone scoring rate.
4. Tennessee Volunteers
- SU Record: 6-1
- ATS Record: 4-3
Tennessee hasn’t been elite against the spread this season, but they’re trending in the right direction. Over their last four games, they covered as underdogs against Texas, covered as favorites against Auburn, and beat Alabama outright as underdogs.
This certainly is a potential letdown spot for the Volunteers, as they’re small road underdogs against South Carolina. The Gamecocks are coming off a bye, giving them ample time to prepare.
Turnovers could play a big role in this game, though, as Tennessee ranks 14th in the country in turnover margin per game (+0.8), while South Carolina ranks 79th in the same category (-0.2).
5. Kentucky Wildcats
- SU Record: 6-1
- ATS Record: 6-1
Kentucky failed to cover against Alabama early in the season, but they’ve covered in five consecutive games now. They’ve also won three consecutive games outright as underdogs. They beat Texas A&M outright as a 17-point underdog earlier in this run, as well.
For the first time this season, Kentucky’s gotten respect from the sportsbooks, as they’re double-digit favorites against Vanderbilt. This is the first Power Four opponent they’ve been favored against in 2026.
I’m a bit skeptical about Kentucky’s advanced metrics long-term, but I’m not drawing the line here. Vanderbilt’s been on an SEC skid, losing each of their first four SEC games, including as a favorite over Arkansas last week.
Five Overvalued College Football Teams Entering Week 8
Here are five overvalued teams to consider avoiding when betting college football in Week 8.
1. Texas Longhorns
- SU Record: 4-2
- ATS Record: 1-5
Texas started the season strong, although they’ve been overvalued from early on. They posted a 1-0 ATS record, beating Texas State with ease, but they’ve followed that up with five consecutive ATS losses.
The bigger key for Texas is that they’re on a two-game losing streak at the moment. They lost as more than a touchdown favorite to Oklahoma two weeks ago and followed that up by losing as a nearly two-touchdown favorite to Florida and their backup quarterback last week.
Texas is in close to a must-win situation to keep their CFB Playoff hopes alive, but they shouldn’t be more than a field-goal favorite against another high-end SEC team this week.
2. Indiana Hoosiers
- SU Record: 6-1
- ATS Record: 1-6
It’s tough to write this if you watched the game last week because Indiana should’ve easily won. Nick Marsh caught a would-be touchdown but landed out of bounds at the end of the game that would’ve given Indiana the win and cover, and he easily could’ve stayed in if not for a lapse in judgment.
Still, Indiana couldn’t beat Ohio State after Julian Sayin got injured, and they’ve struggled to cover in their games throughout the entire season.
Michigan’s struggled offensively, and they’re dealing with quarterback issues. They boast a high-end defense, though, and it’s tough to back Indiana as more than a touchdown favorite on the road.
3. San Diego State Aztecs
- SU Record: 3-4
- ATS Record: 2-5
San Diego State hasn’t created explosive plays or performed well in the red zone this season. They’re short road favorites against Colorado State, who’s proven they can score points in 2026.
The Rams feature one of the worst defenses in the NCAA, though, which is where the Aztecs could find success. This comes down to how much you trust a failing offense against one of the FBS’s worst defenses.
4. Arizona State Sun Devils
- SU Record: 3-3
- ATS Record: 2-4
Arizona State easily covered in their first game against Morgan State, and that’s most of the ATS success they’ve found. They did cover as a -5.5 point favorite against Kansas, winning that game by seven. They’ve also failed to cover in either of their games as underdogs in 2026.
In their three games when favored by 3.5 points or fewer or listed as an underdog, they’re 0-3, losing to Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech. They’re failing to cover by an average of 21.5 points per game in those contests.
Arizona State pulled their starting quarterback at halftime last week, and they’re dealing with several issues entering this game.
5. Oklahoma Sooners
- SU Record: 3-3
- ATS Record: 2-4
Oklahoma’s only covered the spread in one game as a favorite this season, which was a 51-0 win over UTEP. They’ve also lost to Michigan and Kentucky as a favorite in 2026.
John Mateer was a Heisman favorite before the season, but his Heisman odds have dropped significantly. He’s been one of the biggest reasons Oklahoma has been overrated thus far.
It’s important to keep in mind that Kamario Taylor is currently questionable and dealing with an injury, and his availability will play a huge factor in this game. Keeping up with key injuries is key for betting college football in Week 8.
How to Use College Football ATS Trends When Betting Week 8
ATS records show how teams have performed relative to sportsbook expectations, but past results don’t guarantee future covers. The goal is to use those trends as context and determine whether the betting market is still mispricing them.
Several factors can help answer that question:
- Has the market already adjusted to recent results?
- Has the spread moved significantly since opening?
- Have injuries changed the roster/depth chart?
- Are recent improvements or struggles sustainable?
- Do advanced metrics support the team’s actual results?
When betting college football spreads, the goal isn’t simply to identify which team is more likely to win. It’s to determine whether the current spread accurately depicts the gap between the two teams.
