Catalytic horse

Catalytic has yet to run a horse race outside of the state of Florida. A lightly-run colt, the Saffie Joseph Jr. product looks to shock bettors after closing a 50-1 longshot among 2024 Kentucky Derby odds in April’s futures pool. Just three races under his belt – two of which came in March – there’s a lot of unknown surrounding Catalytic. However, he did improve with each race and didn’t shy away from Grade I competition in the Florida Derby. Although Fierceness, one of the derby favorites, trounced him, Catalytic still finished second in the field, securing enough points for the 150th Run for the Roses.

Below, we’ll look at everything you need to know to bet Catalytic in the upcoming Kentucky Derby.

The Word On Catalytic

Mar. 30: Sat a length behind pace-setter Fierceness for most of the Florida Derby before getting left in the dust down the final stretch and losing by several lengths.

Apr. 7: Closed a 50-1 longshot in April’s Kentucky Derby futures pool 6.

Apr. 25: Worked a mile and a half on Thursday. “He’s doing well,” said Tristan Ford, an assistant to trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., after the gallop. “Everyone is happy with the way he’s progressing.”

Apr. 27: Opened 30-1 on the morning line, running out of Post 5.

May 1: “He’s going to school in the paddock during race two this afternoon,” trainer Saffie Joseph said Wednesday. “[Thursday], he’ll gallop again, and maybe school in the paddock, depending on how today goes.”

“All is well with him. He’s been handling everything very well so far.”
