Quick Facts About Graded Trading Cards

The 4 Major Trading Card Grading Companies

We can count more than 10 companies that grade trading cards. However, as a US collector, these are the four most important names you should know:

CompanyTop grade
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA)Gem Mint 10
Beckett Grading Services (BGS)Pristine 10: Black Label
Certified Guaranty Company (CGC)Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 10
Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC)Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 10

Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA)

Without question, PSA is the most widely recognized name in the industry. You’ll see the brand’s rating on many highly expensive collectibles. To illustrate, the most valuable Fortnite card is a PSA 10-graded 2019 Panini Fortnite Black Knight "Crystal Shard" #252, which sold for $100,000.

PSA uses a 10-point scale. At the top is the PSA 10 Gem Mint rating, while a PSA 1 card is typically in poor condition with severe wear or damage.

Beckett Grading Services (BGS)

BGS is one company we recognize for its detailed subgrades. Like PSA, BGS uses a 1-to-10 scale. However, the brand uses half-point increments, such as 8.5 and 9.5. The Black Label grade is the most sought-after among collectors.

Our research shows the second most valuable NASCAR card is a 1997 Max 888 Redemption Card / Rookie Auto (Dale Earnhardt Sr., /100, BGS 9). The collectible was bought for $6,000.

Certified Guaranty Company (CGC)

You’re more likely to see TCG cards with a CGC rating than sports collectibles. The company follows a similar scale with half-point increments like BGS. One distinction we noticed is that it has two top ratings: Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 10. However, CGC Pristine 10 cards are considered perfect.

The most expensive CGC-certified card we discovered has a lower 8.5 grade. It’s a 1996 Japanese CoroCoro Comics Pikachu Glossy Pokémon collectible with a $3.3 million sale price.

Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC)

From the name of this company, you can already tell it's connected to sports trading cards. Indeed, SGC is a grader we often run into when chasing vintage sports collectibles. The company adds black inserts in its slabs, giving them a unique appearance.

A good example of a vintage sports card is the 1909-11 T206 Piedmont Bill Carrigan Signed Card, graded SGC 9 Mint. That said, it isn’t one of the best autograph cards by sales price, as it was sold for only $570 at auction.

Why Rip Graded Card Packs Over Raw Ones

A pack containing ungraded cards usually costs less than one with graded copies of the same collectibles. So, why spend more ripping the latter? Let’s look at the main reasons:

Graded cards are highly authentic

If a trading card is graded, one thing you can trust is that it's not a fake. Certification companies can identify collectibles that are counterfeit, altered, or questionable. We’re not trying to say that their authentication is always 100% accurate. However, the odds of getting a fake item are extremely low compared to raw packs.

The items are in verified condition

The four companies we mentioned earlier inspect various aspects when rating trading cards. They generally evaluate centering, corners, edges, surface, gloss, and print quality, among others.

So if a card has a high grade, you can be certain that it’s in good condition. This has nothing to do with the item being authentic or fake. A genuine card in bad physical condition will receive a low grade.

Graders seal cards in slabs

Once graded, the cards are sealed in protective holders, which you probably know as slabs. As such, they’re less likely to get damaged from handling. This factor counts especially with online mystery packs and box breaks.

For example, during live sports card breaks, graded cards in slabs stay safe from scratches as the host opens the boxes and showcases the items. When you choose to receive the physical copy, the slab can prevent the collectible from bending during delivery.

Many buyers prefer graded cards

With a raw trading card, you sometimes have to be an expert salesman to find a buyer. That’s not the case with high-grade items because many collectors chase them by default. A PSA 10 card doesn’t need much convincing to sell, especially if it's rare.

Take the most valuable Harry Potter card as an example. It’s reportedly a Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint triple-autograph card with a PSA 8 rating, which sold for $100,040. Most buyers will be skeptical of buying such a rare item if it isn’t graded.

Upsides and Downsides of Packs with Graded Cards

Graded card packs have multiple benefits to collectors, but there’s one trade-off, as we’ve outlined below:

Best Graded Card Packs for Trading Card Collectors
Pros and Cons
  • Less chance of pulling a counterfeit card
  • Verified condition and protection with slabs
  • Easier to resell the collectibles
  • Cost more than ungraded ones

Top 10 Sites With the Best Graded Card Packs

You can visit a physical shop to buy a graded card pack. But if you prioritize convenience, it’s more ideal to rip online.

Even though you’ll be opening digital packs, each card you pull has a real physical version certified by a grading company. However, that only applies if you join a trustworthy platform, which is why we took the time to select the top 10 most reliable. Check them out below:

ClutchPacks – Secure vault storage

ClutchPacks says its digital mystery packs contain no bad cards. We checked and confirmed that most collectibles on the site are graded by companies like PSA and BGS. Others are authenticated by an in-house team.

So, you can expect legitimate trading cards on ClutchPacks, though their value may be higher or lower than what you paid. Categories available include Pokémon, One Piece, baseball, football, soccer, and multisport.

The platform scored highly in our tests for long-term card storage. If you're not ready to sell or ship them yet, you can keep your pulled collectibles in a secure vault operated by Trace N' Chase. What’s impressive is that the cards will be insured at their full market value.

Packz.io – Detailed pack odds distribution

In each Packz.io mystery pack, you’ll spot the most expensive cards in the Premium Pulls section. For instance, we checked the Sports Entry pack and saw several NFL and MLB collectibles with a PSA 10 and PSA 9. The finding was similar when we looked into the Pokémon gym pack.

However, those premium pulls are rare, and Packz.io is transparent about that. The platform shows you the odds distribution before ripping any pack. This distribution includes both percentages and a meter, so you can tell what card value you might pull at a glance.

If you join Packz.io, the first pack you open is sweat-free, up to $100. In other words, you can sell back the card for 100% of what you paid, up to $100, if it has a lower value.

Rips by Triumph – 100% buyback rate

Several digital mystery pack sites offer a 100% buyback rate, and Rips by Triumph is one of the best we found. Actually, you can’t access the platform via the web. You have to install the iOS or Android mobile app.

Graded packs on Rips by Triumph sell from $1 for Starter to $1,000 for Ruby. Inside them, you have collectibles of six rarities: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Grail. Once you pull a card, you can sell it back for 100% of its fair market value (FMV).

We should mention that the Rips by Triumph app also includes ungraded card packs if you ever want to check them out. That said, availability depends on the real-time inventory.

Courtyard – Unique Wildcard packs

Courtyard’s Wildcard packs cost $15, $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, and $2,500. As such, the price range is wide enough to find something that suits your budget. The part that caught our attention is that you never know what you can pull from those packs.

When you select a Wildcard pack on Courtyard, you’ll see the site’s notice that ‘each pack contains a graded card.’ However, whether it’s a sports, Pokémon, MTG, One Piece, or Marvel Comics card is something you have to wait until after opening to find out.

Our first rip was the $25 Starter pack, and we pulled a 2025 Bowman Chrome Prospects #BCP79 Kevin Mcgonigle (PSA 8 NM-MT). Next, we paid $15 for Basic and got a 2023 Future Flash #073/066 Espathra - Art Rare Holo (CGC 10 GEM MINT).

Boxed.gg – Unlimited rare graded cards

We consider Boxed.gg a platform that has almost everything. On the site, you’ll find digital mystery packs and boxes with graded trading cards from sports, One Piece, Pokémon, Riftbound, and MTG. There are also extra features like battles and a vending machine.

The vending machine interested us because it includes unlimited rare collectibles. After reviewing the section, we can say it’s an ideal place to check for some of the best case hits in sports cards and the available TCGs.

In a baseball vending machine, for example, the top hit was a 2013 BBM 1st Version Shohei Ohtani ROOKIE #183 PSA 9 MINT worth 949,000 gems. For context, that’s $9,450 since 100 gems equal $1 on Boxed.gg. However, the probability of pulling the card was only 0.025%.

Tilt Rips – Top pick for One Piece rips

Consider Tilt Rips if you’re specifically interested in graded One Piece card packs. The site receives our approval because its inventory for the TCG is usually well stocked. Plus, you get affordable prices between $25 and $100.

Before opening a One Piece pack on Tilt Rips, click the What’s Inside button to preview the potential trading cards. We did that for different bundles and spotted multiple PSA 10 and BGS 10 items among the top pulls. On select packs, you can adjust the volatility level before opening.

Tilt Rips buys back cards for 90% of their estimated market value after pulling. Storing the collectibles in a secure vault or asking for delivery to your location in the US are also options.

Mr Loot – Graded packs for Pokémon card sets

Many sites on our list group graded cards based on their own customized digital mystery packs. Mr Loot changes that by featuring the cards by actual sets. It’s only Pokémon for now, though, but the platform may add more TCGs and sports in the future.

After creating our Mr Loot account, we first selected the Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution Perfect Order set. The Essential pack for the series cost only $13.38. Our pull wasn’t the best anyway, as we received a Mega Starmie ex 102/088 [Holo Ultra] worth $8.90.

You can see the odds of each potential trading card on Mr Loot before ripping. The site even has a demo open option.

Royale.gg – Mixed digital mystery boxes

Royale.gg lets you buy digital mystery boxes that include graded cards and other collectible items. For instance, we opened a Holy Grail box on the site. Inside it was a Pokémon Lillie 2017 TCG Japanese SR (PSA 10) and a Fujishima Pikachu PSA 10 GEM (PWCC), alongside clothes, watches, smartphones, and toys.

If you want dedicated trading card boxes, Royale.gg still has several in stock. You just have to search the collection to find them.

Pokémon collectibles are the most common on the site, but we’ve also come across sports, Disney Lorcana, and Yu-Gi-Oh! items. Similar to Mr Loot, there’s a demo option called Test Spin to try before paying.

Lastpack – Delivery within five days

When you want to receive the physical graded cards after ripping, Lastpack is one of the fastest platforms to count on. The platform will deliver the item to your doorstep in five business days or less.

Such speed is uncommon, but we verified it's possible because Lastpack has a warehouse in California. So, the cards are shipped from within the US, with logistics handled by USPS.

If you sign up with Lastpack, expect graded One Piece, Pokémon, Dragon Ball, and Riftbound card packs. You’ll see options selling for $1 up to $2,500. Sports packs are not included yet but may be added subsequently.

Beezie – Variety of graded cards in the marketplace

You won’t see regular digital mystery packs on Beezie. This site uses a claw machine instead to pull cards at random, and there are three price points: Wildcard ($30), Silver ($50), and Gold TCG ($250). Rest assured that the items included are graded.

For more variety, we suggest paying attention to the Beezie marketplace. We counted 12 card categories in the section, including less popular ones like Pudgy Vibes and VeeFriends.

With the broad range, we hoped to see the most valuable SpongeBob card packs, but they weren’t present at the time. Besides, most marketplace sellers list individual items rather than packs.

Conclusion – Join Reliable Digital Mystery Pack Sites for Graded Cards

The main benefit of choosing graded packs is that you can pull authenticated trading cards with a score that tells you about their physical condition. If you’re collecting them to store, the protective slabs prevent the cards from losing shape. Alternatively, if you want to sell, buyers will trust that the item is legitimate.

As our reviews show, you don’t need a large budget to open graded card packs. Some platforms let you rip for $1 or less. At the same time, if you’re chasing premium cards, you can choose more expensive packs, some costing over $2,500.
