Discovering what Shiny.com has to offer
We’ll be providing loads more handy details on things like bonuses, rewards and customer support later on, but first, let’s get familiar with how Shiny actually works.
For anyone new to the platform, Shiny is an online destination for Pokémon and One Piece collectors, with real PSA-graded trading cards at the heart of the experience. It also uses crypto and blockchain technology to manage transactions and digital ownership of collectibles.
Mystery packs are one of its main attractions, with collectors opening packs to discover which cards they've received. However, there's also a dedicated marketplace where users can buy and sell individual cards.
Ripping mystery packs at Shiny.com
The first thing we came across when researching was that packs come at different price points, with each offering its own selection of possible cards. For example, we spotted the Pokémon Starter Pack at $25 and the Solana Promo Pack at $50.
Having checked out the Pokémon Starter Pack ourselves, we were impressed by some of the cards on offer. We can't guarantee what you'll pull of course, but we felt the selection held its own against some of the best rips by Triumph Packs and other platforms we've reviewed recently.
In terms of the actual ripping process, we found it super simple to follow:
-
Pick your pack: Choose from the available options, taking a look at the price and possible cards.
-
Check the odds: Shiny publishes the probability of receiving each card, so you can see the potential outcomes before purchasing.
-
Rip it open: Purchase your pack and reveal which card you've received.
-
Make your choice: Keep the card in secure storage, explore the selling or buyback options, or arrange to have the physical card delivered.
Buying and selling through the Shiny marketplace
If you've got a particular card on your wishlist, or you've ripped something that doesn't quite fit your collection- that’s when you can turn to the marketplace.
Collectors can purchase individual cards at listed prices or put eligible cards from their own collection up for sale. There's no mystery over which collectible you're purchasing, and sellers can set their own asking prices.
Shiny also offers an instant buyback feature for eligible cards, subject to availability and applicable conditions. This provides another possible route for selling a collectible without waiting for a marketplace buyer.
What’s Shiny.com like to use?
For a platform with an active trading marketplace, user experience and layout was always going to be important to us as there’s nothing worse than a laggy or overly-cluttered site! First impressions were very positive, and we have to say we're fans of the dark theme and cool card artwork- it definitely looks like it’s aimed at trading card collectors.
The layout is easy enough to get around, and it’s reassuringly quick, with the main sections accessible from the sidebar. Among the best things we liked were:
- Mystery pack browsing: Pack prices are clearly displayed, and you can check the possible cards and their odds before making a purchase.
- Marketplace filters: You can narrow down the available cards by collection, price and other options, which saves plenty of scrolling if you're looking for something specific.
- Your collection: There's a dedicated area for keeping track of your cards.
- Helpful information: The FAQ and other useful links are easy to find, which is always welcome when you're getting familiar with a newer platform.
The only critique we had was on the audio effects, the clicking sound that follows you around while navigating the site may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Using Shiny.com on mobile
Prefer browsing on your cell? Shiny is accessible through a mobile browser, so you can check out packs, browse the marketplace and manage your collection on the go, while the experience is still smooth.
A quick look on the Google Play Store and the iPhone App store didn’t reveal any native mobile app yet, but this is not unusual in the space right now and we found the same thing when we did this Pullbox review.
Is Shiny.com safe and legitimate?
Trust in any card ripping platform is obviously hugely important, and there were a few checks we wanted to undertake straight away to establish Shiny's legitimacy. Reassuringly, we found plenty of useful info, especially around how the platform handles its cards and transactions.
Here are some of the main things we uncovered:
- PSA-graded cards: Shiny deals in professionally graded collectibles, with PSA certification numbers that can be checked through the official PSA certification database.
- Third-party vault storage: Physical cards are stored through Alt, a specialist collectibles vaulting provider.
- Blockchain ownership: Shiny uses NFTs to represent ownership of physical cards, with further info about how this works available in the platform's FAQs and Terms of Service.
- Verifiable pack openings: Shiny uses a commit-reveal system alongside publicly verifiable randomness from Drand. The platform's fairness docs explain how users can check that pack results are random.
- Operator information: Shiny lists Shiny Labs Inc. as the company behind the platform, with its legal terms and other policies in the website's footer.
Latest Shiny bonus and rewards to look out for
In our opinion, Shiny has one of the best, or at least most varied, bonus and rewards offerings available to collectors right now. There's a top-tier welcome offer, exciting daily challenges and even the chance to pick up an extra card when ripping packs.
| Bonus or reward | Headline details | Main requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome discount | 5% off your first eligible pack | New users joining through an eligible referral |
| Bonus card | 1% probability of an additional card, with multipliers from 2.5x to 10x | Qualifying pack openings |
| Collector levels | Pack discount credits across 100 levels | Collect XP through qualifying activity |
| Daily challenges | Unlock pending bonus XP | Complete daily tasks before they expire |
| Referral rewards | 10%–25% of qualifying marketplace fees | Refer eligible users- percentage depends on tier |
Shiny.com's welcome offer for new collectors
Starting with the welcome offer, we think Shiny has a very good offer in store for new collectors, with 5% off your first eligible pack purchase. That's a decent saving, especially if you've got your eye on a higher-value pack.
Just remember that you can only use this welcome offer once, and you don’t actually need a Shiny.com promo code either.
An extra card with Shiny's pack bonus
We’ve not really seen this offer anywhere else, including when we did a full Collector Crypt review. This is why we really liked it, every qualifying pack purchase includes a 1% chance of receiving an additional bonus card, with a ten-stage system determining the potential bonus multiplier.
After doing some digging we found it works like this:
- The bonus begins at Stage 1, with a 2.5x multiplier.
- Progression occurs every 25 pack openings through the first four stages, then every 50 openings for later stages.
- The multiplier can reach 10x at Stage 10.
- After a bonus card is awarded, the system resets and a 30 second cooldown applies.
The only thing to note here is that the 1% probability doesn’t guarantee that you will receive an additional card.
Collector levels and pack discount credits
Shiny also has a progression system featuring 100 collector levels, with pack discount credits available as you move through them.
Progress is measured using XP from qualifying platform activity. The rates published are:
- Quick Sell: Up to 5 XP per $1.
- Quick Sell with marketplace fees: Up to 7.5 XP per $1.
- Marketplace transactions: Up to 1.25 XP per $1.
These are maximum rates with the relevant bonus XP unlocked, so the amount credited immediately may be lower. The platform also links XP to future community airdrop allocations.
Daily challenges and bonus XP
Daily challenges are another top addition, and Shiny places an amount equivalent to 33% of qualifying activity XP into a pending pool, with portions allocated across the day's challenges.
Each completed challenge unlocks its assigned portion, while any pending XP attached to an unfinished challenge is forfeited when it expires.
Shiny's referral rewards
Finally, there's a five-tier referral program for collectors who introduce eligible new users to the platform.
The commission ranges from 10% to 25%, depending on your referral tier. However, be aware that the percentage applies to qualifying marketplace transaction fees (not the full value of cards purchased or sold unfortunately).
Payments and fees at Shiny.com
When it comes to paying for packs or buying cards through the marketplace, Shiny supports USDC crypto payments alongside balances and credits held in your account. You'll need a compatible crypto wallet for direct USDC payments (although third-party services may allow you to purchase USDC using a bank card).
| Payment method | Details |
|---|---|
| USDC on Base | Supported cryptocurrency payment |
| USDC.e on Abstract | Supported cryptocurrency payment |
| Shiny Coins | Existing in-platform balance used for purchases |
| Pack Credits | Reward credits redeemable for eligible pack openings |
As for fees, we were pleased to see that marketplace buyers aren't charged anything extra, while sellers pay a 4% fee on each sale. There may also be some small blockchain transaction fees, although Shiny covers most of these costs. Payments can occasionally take a little longer to process when networks are busy too (worth bearing in mind).
Getting help from Shiny customer support
Got a question or need a hand with something? Shiny has a handy FAQ section covering common queries, along with live chat if you'd prefer to speak directly with the team.
We gave the live chat a try ourselves, asking whether Ethereum (ETH) was accepted for purchases. We received a helpful response, although it could have come through a touch quicker.
There's also a Discord community and an official X profile, both useful for updates and connecting with other collectors, although neither would be our first port of call for account or payment queries.
Does Shiny.com have that extra sparkle?
We're wrapping up this Shiny.com review and leaving you on a largely positive note as we think there's plenty of sparkle here! The bonuses and rewards are among the strongest we've seen in this space, while the transparent pack odds and ability to sell cards instantly through the buyback feature are big positives in our eyes.
We'd like to see a few minor UX issues ironed out, as well as a proper mobile app and more card collections added beyond Pokémon and One Piece. However, we'd happily give this platform the nod.
