Top five most valuable Transformers cards
Unlike the most valuable SpongeBob cards, Transformers have a much longer history. Compared to the early 2000’s release of SpongeBob trading cards, the first release of Transformers trading cards was back in 1985. That was through a partnership between Milton Bradley and Hasbro. We noticed that three cards from the 1985 Hasbro G1 set rank among the most expensive Transformers collectibles on the market.
The crossover Magic: The Gathering Beyond Universes set has also received a lot of fanfare. However, these rank among the lower end of the most expensive Transformers items.
Have a gander at the table below for a closer look at the top five costliest Transformers cards:
| Card name | Set/Year | Rarity | Grade | Estimated value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Optimus Prime #1 | 1985 Hasbro G1 | Character Rookie Card | PSA 9 | $4,250 |
| Bumblebee (#28 Blue) | 1985 Hasbro G1 | Rare Color Variant | PSA 10 | $1,910 |
| Megatron (#97 Yellow) | 1985 Hasbro G1 | Rare Color Variant | PSA 10 | $1,500 |
| Optimus Prime, Hero #27 | 2022 Magic: The Gathering | Shattered Glass Foil | PSA 10 | $606 |
| Slicer, Hired Muscle #21 | 2022 Magic: The Gathering | Shattered Glass Foil | PSA 10 | $392 |
A closer look at the most expensive Transformers cards
Similar to the most valuable Fortnite cards, the Transformers card rankings are ever-changing. We found several cards listed for sale online, including those from various sets. So, the estimated prices will change in the future. You should check back on this page for updated lists of the most expensive cards.
For now, the top five costliest cards are:
- 1985 Hasbro Optimus Prime #1 Rookie PSA 9
- 1985 Hasbro Transformers Bumblebee #28 PSA 10 (Blue Background Variant)
- 1985 Hasbro Transformers #97 Megatron PSA 10 (Yellow Background Variant)
- 2022 Magic: The Gathering (Universes Beyond) Optimus Prime, Hero (Shattered Glass Foil #27)
- 2022 Magic: The Gathering (Universes Beyond) Slicer, Hired Muscle (Shattered Glass Foil #21)
Below are some insights and background into each and how the estimated values were determined:
1985 Hasbro Optimus Prime #1 Rookie PSA 9
The Hasbro/Milton Bradley series was the first official Transformers trading card set. Card #1 marked the debut of Optimus Prime in this series. It is a rookie character card with a low-pop grail.
Since it was #1 and from the first-ever series, the card’s standard wear would not be the best. This is a 1985 item, and, based on our research, there are only a limited number of high-grade copies in circulation today.
Recently, the 1985 Hasbro Optimus Prime #1 Rookie PSA 9 topped the charts for the highest estimated value for any Transformers card. It was sold on eBay for $4,250.
1985 Hasbro Transformers Bumblebee #28 PSA 10
When the 1985 Hasbro Transformers set was released, Bumblebee was card number #28. Bumblebee became one of the most popular Transformers. His popularity led to the making of his own feature film, which was released in 2018.
The most notable copy is the blue background. The yellow and black robotic form of Bumblebee poses in front of a blue background. The card has the iconic white minimalist border, like many of the other 1985 Hasbro Transformers cards.
All the main attributes are clearly displayed, including his courage and endurance stats. In early September 2026, the PSA 10 copy of this item sold on eBay for $1,910.
1985 Hasbro Transformers #97 Megatron (Yellow Background Variant)
Another coveted card from the Hasbro/Milton Bradley series is the 1985 Hasbro Transformers #97 Megatron (Yellow Background Variant). It is popular because it is an iconic Generation One (G1) character card. Plus, Megatron will always go down as Optimus Prime’s longtime Decepticon rival.
Card #97 was the first Decepticon character in the set, which covered cards #97 to #122. There are various details on Megatron’s attributes on this card. These include his strength, intelligence, skill and firepower.
According to the latest statistics, a PSA 10 copy is estimated at above $1,000. It was sold on eBay in August 2026 for $1,500.
2022 Magic: The Gathering (Universes Beyond) Optimus Prime, Hero (Shattered Glass Foil #27)
This card is from the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond series. The Shattered Glass alternative universe series had an interesting storyline. Here, the factions were switched around. So, Optimus Prime was a bad guy!
The card has a borderless visual layout. The artwork depicts Optimus Prime in an evil, dark theme. He has a cracked windshield and spine-tingling, glowing red eyes. In our experience, pulling the Shattered Glass Foil #27 was rare.
In fact, due to the scarcity, PSA 10 copies sell for the highest price in the Universes Beyond series. In May 2026, a minted copy was sold in an online auction for $606.
2022 Magic: The Gathering (Universes Beyond) Slicer, Hired Muscle (Shattered Glass Foil #21)
Slicer is also part of the Shattered Glass alternative universe series. It is a rare double-faced mythic crossover card #21. The visuals are striking, with the Decepticon transformer in a dark design of the Shattered Glass lore.
You should avoid mixing the #6 and #21 Slicer cards. The #6 is not worth much as it is the standard version. The #21 is the Shattered Glass Foil, which has proved hard to pull. Mainly because it is exclusive inside the premium The Brothers War Collector Boosters.
When we researched the most expensive cards, we found that the Slicer, Hired Muscle #21, was sold online for $392. It was a PSA 10 and in good condition, so there was a strong bidding war.
Insight into how we ranked these collectible cards
Ranking the top Transformers cards was a challenging task. As we found when we ranked the most valuable Harry Potter cards, there are several factors to consider. These included the grade, condition, features and abilities, autographs and external factors.
Card grade
Transformers cards are graded by third-party grading companies, such as the Professional Sports Authenticator and Beckett Grading Services. Since these are independent authenticators, these cards have higher values. For example, many of the top ranked cards covered on this page are PSA 10.
Condition
Cards in pristine condition will always hold more value regardless of a specific grade. For instance, we did find that the Optimus Prime #1 Rookie PSA 9 had a much higher price compared to the Megatron (#97 Yellow) PSA 10. This was mainly due to the condition of the card.
Even though it was a lower grade, it was a mint condition card. Minted cards will always rank at the top of any collectors requirements. These items are generally in pristine condition with no folds or scratches.
Features and abilities
When we compiled our most valuable Final Fantasy cards, we mentioned how important card abilities are for pricing. However, as we observed, there are no official Transformers trading card games anymore. Thus, the majority of collectibles don’t have special gameplay features or abilities.
Interestingly, the Slicer, Hired Muscle and Optimus Prime Hero cards from the 2022 Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond set do have special features and abilities. So, in terms of other cards from that set, those two rank at the top for our special ability ratings as they have better features.
Autographs
Verified autograph cards always go for high prices as these are rare to find. Many of the voice artists’ autograph items have sold for thousands of Dollars online.
External factors
Prices will always fluctuate because there are many external factors to consider. For example, with the passing of Peter Cullen, the prices of signed Optimus Prime cards have doubled or tripled in value.
Another external factor that we considered is new releases. Many companies are still releasing new sets for the Transformers franchise. In September 2026, Upper Deck released a special Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary set in partnership with Target. There has already been high demand among collectors. The Fleer Transformers full hobby set is expected to be released in late 2026.
Some tips for Transformers collectors to remember
Since there is high demand for Transformers cards, you need to maximize your activities. Here are some tips on how to have a pleasant time collecting trading cards:
- Use online card rip sites to find more graded and authenticated cards. We have plenty of reviews evaluating trusted card break platforms. Read these reviews and then sign up with these brands. Many of these sites have Transformers hobby boxes, plus you can trade with others on the marketplace.
- Try your best to protect your cards at all times. Purchase protective cases and always keep your items in these cases, even when showing them to others. Ensuring your cards are in good condition can significantly affect the estimated value when selling.
- Transformers cards do not have a reserved list. So, it is possible for vintage cards to be reprinted, especially as we have seen many new anniversary releases. Therefore, keep an eye on forums for the latest information on potential new sets. This will help you find reprints of vintage cards and track the current market values of specific cards.
Pros and cons: Transformers costliest trading cards
- Lots of PSA 10 graded items
- New cards are regularly released
- Collector demand is high
- Values fluctuate
Verdict - The values of Transformers trading cards are increasing
In our experience, Transformers may not grow as large as other franchises, such as Pokémon. However, the good news is that there is still a strong demand for Transformers collectibles. This is evident in the latest Upper Deck Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary set, which was released in 2026.
With more sets to come in the future, many collectors are after graded and authenticated cards. So, it is possible that in the future, Transformers cards will have even bigger estimated values. Yes, that means even more than the 1985 Hasbro Optimus Prime #1 Rookie PSA 9, which sold for $4,250.
If you are an avid collector or new to the market, remember to take care of your cards and keep them in a protective sleeve.
