What is PSA card grading?

Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) is the global leader in trading card grading. Launched in 1991, PSA became one of the first grading services to pioneer the numeral 1-to-10 grading scale to assess a card’s condition – a mechanic that’s since become the industry standard across the hobby.

On a sliding scale of trusted grading card services, PSA is right up there with, say, our CGC card grading review. It’s the number-one brand for serious collectors, and while its grading services may carry a premium price tag, this is reflected in the real-world resale value of your collection.

Which cards does PSA grade?

PSA began grading sports cards, including big-name franchises like the NFL, NBA, and MLB. And while sports cards remain very much in the company’s wheelhouse, the platform has moved with the times, and now grades all manner of alternatives – from Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering to Yu-Gi-Oh!, non-sports, and entertainment cards.

How does the PSA card grading process work?

By this point, PSA has card grading down to what we would define as the finest of fine art. There are basically five steps to its card grading process, and with additional features like the PSA app and its Vault & Sell options, you can do a whole lot more than simply receive a mark-out-of-10 grade, too.

Here’s a quick, step-by-step look at PSA’s well-oiled card grading process.

  1. Use the official link to the PSA site on this page to get started.

  2. Take a look at PSA’s offering, including its pricing and services. You ought to read its T&Cs, too, particularly concerning insurance and coverage.

  3. When you’re ready, tap the “Start Submission” button. You can also download the excellent PSA app and take care of all this on your smartphone.

  4. After starting your submission, you’re presented with three options: Grade with PSA, Sell on eBay, or Secure with PSA Vault. Assuming that you came here for help on how to grade Pokémon cards or similar collectibles, we’ll focus on the Grade with PSA option right now.

  5. Provide a few details, including the type of card you’re sending and its estimated FMV (full market value). Then, select your preferred service (more on those later).

  6. The next step is to prepare and ship your cards to PSA. The brand provides a full guide on how to take care of this safely, so be sure to follow its guidance and suggestions.

  7. PSA will provide an estimated turnaround time. However, several factors can affect this, so be sure to track the progress of your grading in your PSA account.

  8. Once you’ve received your PSA grade, you have a couple of different options. You can either have the card shipped back to you, now in its shiny new box featuring the coveted PSA label, or you can store it in the secure PSA Vault. Alternatively, you can also choose to sell it on eBay, with PSA taking care of the particulars of the sale on your behalf.

Is PSA grading worth it?

If you’ve glanced at the services list on the PSA site, you’ll know that its gradings carry a premium price tag – particularly when compared with our recent BGS card grading review. So, you’ll want to know that pursuing an official PSA grading is worth your time.

Does PSA offer accurate and consistent card grading?

A PSA grade is considered the best in the market. Fact. Since its launch in the early 1990s, the company has graded over 90 million items, and its quality, consistency, and reputation have been consistent.

To achieve high standards of card grading, PSA utilizes multi-point review criteria. This includes:

PSA card protection and labeling – what’s included?

Since PSA labels and card protection carry a lot of value, you’ll want to know that you’re getting the best possible outcome based on the service and tier you opt for.

The good news is that all PSA card gradings, irrespective of the service cost, include a “tamper-evident, sonically sealed case” – that’s according to the brand’s own “Benefits” literature. This is considered the gold standard in card grading security, and paired with the PSA’s much-coveted grading label, adds considerable weight to the resale value of the card it encapsulates.

What are the pros and cons of PSA card grading?

If you’re comparing PSA to, say, our Ace card grading review, it’s good to know the top-line benefits and drawbacks of each service. So, with that in mind, here are the pros and cons you need to bear in mind about PSA card grading.

What is the average PSA grading cost?

We’ve mentioned a couple of times that PSA grading is the most expensive in the industry. But how much are we talking here? And what affects the price of PSA grading at different tiers and service levels?

Like other card grading services – see our SGC card grading review, for example – PSA’s pricing is influenced by a card’s fair market value (FMV), the desired turnaround time, and the inclusion of add-on features like “Grader Notes” and a fitted sleeve protector. Here’s a complete guide to the brand’s tiers and pricing structure, accurate at the time of writing (October 2026).

Our take on PSA grading cost: Higher prices, but stronger potential resale values

There’s no getting around the fact that PSA card grading is expensive. Compare PSA’s pricing to CGC’s (which often ranks alongside PSA), and its grading services will set you back significantly more.

Some context is needed here, however. For example, PSA-graded cards generally have the highest resale value of all collectible trading cards, so securing a PSA grade could add significant value to your collection.

Note, too, that for high-value cards, PSA doesn’t charge a percentage of the full market value. As seen in our Tag card grading review, some companies add a 1% fee that’s equal to a card’s FMV. This could add a major expense – especially if you’re looking to grade a $1M+ card (it happens).

PSA grading turnaround time: How long does it take?

Knowing how long card grading takes is important. You may be planning to sell certain cards, or you might simply want your precious collectibles back as quickly as possible.

While PSA provides estimated turnaround times for all its grading tiers, these aren’t the most reliable in the industry. Since its grading service is insanely popular, the volume of items the company receives can often delay turnaround times. Add to that delivery and shipping times, which can also vary, and you should take its quoted turnaround times with a pinch of salt.

What is the average turnaround time for PSA grading?

The turnaround time you can expect will vary based on the tier you choose. The entry-level grading tier, Standard, takes approximately 90 to 100 business days, while the uppermost tiers are handled in 5-7 business days.

Even for the fastest plans, PSA turnaround times are slower than the industry average, so keep that in mind. The company also caveats all its turnaround times with the following disclaimer:

“Estimated Turnaround Times are estimates only and not guaranteed. A service level’s Estimated Turnaround Time does not begin until the order has been entered into the grading system. These times are based on, and may be impacted by, PSA’s submission volume, capacity, and other unforeseen circumstances. Turnaround Times may change rapidly without notice as conditions change.”

The final word on PSA grading: Is this the only choice for pro-level grading?

Sure, the PSA is expensive. And, yes, its turnaround times are a touch unreliable. But if you’re going to the trouble to get your cards graded, surely you want it done by the best name in the hobby?

That’s what PSA offers. Its card grading services are second-to-none on all fronts, hence its high price point. In return, you get a professional, best-in-class card grade that will add genuine, real-world value to your collection. So if you’re looking to maximize the residual value of your cards with a view to selling them on in the future, the PSA is probably the best service to go for.
