Coastal Athletic Association betting tips

Although the Cougars won the 2023 CAA Tournament, they lost three of their starters entering this season. Their 1-3 start was fathomable, but they also dealt with horrific 3-point variance, shooting 18.8% during that stretch.

Since then, they’re up to 37.0% over a much larger sample size. Junior two-guard Reyne Smith leads the charge from behind the arc, hitting 16 triples in Charleston’s last two regular-season games. However, the other end of the court is a different story.

After earning a top-70 defensive efficiency in 2022-23, the Cougars rank No. 169 in that category this go-around (via Haslametrics). Not only has their interior defense taken a hit, but their havoc has also fallen off after finishing top-100 in turnover percentage forced last year.

Betting a high-volume perimeter shooting team at sizeable odds is one thing. Wagering on the favorite is a different story, especially when major defensive concerns exist.

CAA Tournament Betting Value?

Hofstra and UNC Wilmington follow suit on the odds board. Between the two, I’m more intrigued by the Seahawks. Takayo Siddle’s bunch swept the Cougars in the regular season, and they will square off in the semifinals barring an upset.

UNC Wilmington didn’t finish the season strong, going 2-3 straight up. Still, its defense is structured to run opponents off the perimeter and accrue takeaways. In fact, the Seahawks manufactured the highest percentage of turnovers forced (17.5%) in conference play.

Guided by stud forward Trazarien White, UNC Wilmington is capable of avenging last season’s title game defeat to Charleston — en route to winning the tournament. Don’t forget that the Seahawks stumbled in the 2022 CAA Championship against Delaware, to boot.
