Vancouver Whitecaps FC Ready to Start Leagues Cup Campaign

Vancouver Whitecaps FC kicks off its 2026 Leagues Cup campaign today, taking on Mexican side Atlante at BC Place.

The Caps are the clear favourites to start their tournament with a win, but will the Mexicans be a tough nut to crack for Jesper Sorensen’s men?

Can the Caps Return to Winning Ways?

Make no mistake, Vancouver is enjoying a fine season in MLS. The Canadians lead the way in the Western Conference standings, collecting an impressive 34 points from 17 games.

The Caps are level on points with Los Angeles FC, though they have two games in hand on LAFC and have played one match fewer than third-place team San Jose Earthquakes.

The Western Conference’s top two played out a 1-1 draw at BC Place last weekend. Son Heung-Min gave the Californian club a half-time lead, but a late Thomas Muller penalty rescued a point for the host.

Vancouver is riding high at the summit, but Sorensen’s side have picked up just one victory in five. Since returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup break, the Blue-and-White have lost one and tied two of three in MLS.

Vancouver to Get Off to Winning Start?

The Leagues Cup will provide a nice distraction from league soccer, and the Caps have a real chance of getting back to winning ways.

Atlante is back in Mexico’s top division after acquiring Mazatlan, and the Iron Colts have started the 2026 Apertura with four points from a possible nine.

You never know what to expect in this competition, as form and reputation usually go out the window. That said, Vancouver is the red-hot favourite to kick off its Leagues Cup campaign with a routine home victory.

The Canadians have not won since picking up a 4-2 triumph at San Diego FC in May. Its last success at BC Place was a 3-1 win against Colorado Rapids in April. Still, the MLS Western Conference leader should get back to winning ways in midweek.
