In an AL East series opener, the Baltimore Orioles host the Blue Jays as both teams cling to faint playoff hopes. In this Blue Jays vs. Orioles prediction, we will give you the latest odds, game info, the starting pitching matchup, and some player prop bets with good value.

The Blue Jays (77-79) are coming off a win but lost two in a row and four of five games before that. With six games remaining in the regular season, they are tied with the Houston Astros, three games back of the Chicago White Sox for the last AL Wild Card.

The Orioles (75-81) have lost three in a row after winning three in a row. They are five games out of the last AL Wild Card, so they likely need to win out and get a lot of help to have any chance at the postseason.

Blue Jays vs. Orioles Odds 

Sports Interaction Sportsbook has the Orioles as slight favorites in this series opener at -115, with the Blue Jays at -105 and a total of 7.5 runs.

Lineup Livens Up as Blue Jays Avoid Sweep 

In their last game, the Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 7-2 in a series finale after losing the first two games and totaling only three runs. In the win, Nathan Lukes and Charles McAdoo each drove in two runs.

While Toronto ranks a respectable ninth in team ERA, they rank second-to-last in the Majors in runs scored.

Kazuma Okamoto (.235, 33 home runs, 89 RBIs) is the only player on the Jays with more than 15 home runs and 58 RBIs. He had three home runs in four games, including two facing the Orioles, but has not hit a home run and has only one RBI over the last five games.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (.263, 9 home runs, 56 RBIs) left Toronto’s last game with a back injury and is listed as day-to-day.  This season, he and George Springer (.248, 15 home runs, 53 RBIs) have only combined for 24 home runs after combining for 55 last season.

Toronto Starter for Series Opener 

Trey Yesavage (5-5, 3.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) gets the start, is recently off the injured list, and has not started since August 5. On the season the Blue Jays have lost both of his starts facing the Orioles; in the first, he gave up only one run, and in the second, he was lit up for six runs. This season, Yesavage has 91 strikeouts and 46 walks in 93 2/3 innings.

Terrible Time for the Broom for the Orioles 

With their playoff hopes already fading, the Orioles were swept in their last series by the Milwaukee Brewers. They were outscored 10-5 and were shut out in the last two games.

This season, Baltimore ranks in the middle of the pack in runs scored (tied for 15th) and team ERA (14th).

The Orioles have lost six of 10 games against the Blue Jays this season.

Pete Alonso (.264, 34 home runs, 105 RBIs) ranks fourth in the Majors in RBIs, and after a home run in three straight games, he has gone hitless in the last two. Of the seven players with the most at-bats, Alonso is the only one batting over .229.

Baltimore Starter for Series Opener 

Shane Baz (5-14, 4.11 ERA, 1.35 WHIP) goes for the O’s, and they have won his last two starts despite him giving up eight runs in 9 2/3 innings. In his one start against the Blue Jays early in the season, he gave up one run in 5 2/3 innings, but the bullpen let him down in a 6-4 loss. This season, Baz has logged 173 innings, striking out 152 batters and walking 60.

Blue Jays vs. Orioles Prediction 

I am taking the team from the north of the border in this game, as I think Yesavage will have the better outing and the Blue Jays lineup will get some clutch hits. The Orioles have won Baz’s last two starts, even though he gave up eight runs and the lineup helped out. They will not in this game, and they have been shut out in each of their last two games. Toronto will get the win to keep their faint playoff hopes alive while all but killing Baltimore's.
