In-Form David Nets Only Goal in Toronto

Canada picked up a narrow 1-0 victory in an ill-tempered friendly against Chile in Toronto.

Jonathan David has been in fine form since moving to Madrid, and the 26-year-old scored the only goal of the game on Saturday night.

Canadians Keep Up Fine Form

Canada had a memorable 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing their first-ever World Cup win and reaching the Round of 16.

David broke records in Canada’s sensational 6-0 victory over Qatar on matchday two, becoming the first North American player to score a World Cup hat-trick since 1930.

The striker was also the first player since Geoff Hurst to score a treble on home soil. Hurst famously netted three in the 1966 World Cup final in England’s 4-2 win over West Germany.

David was the hero for the national team yet again on Saturday night, scoring the only goal in Toronto. The Atletico Madrid loanee netted in the 12th minute before Lucas Cepeda and Gabriel Suazo were sent off for the away team.

David in Red-Hot Form

David was deemed surplus to requirements at Juventus. Despite interest from the English Premier League, the forward opted for a loan move to the Spanish capital.

He has hit the ground running at the Metropolitano, scoring three in three games in La Liga. Before the international break, David was on target in a 2-1 victory over rival Real Madrid.

As Canada bids to reach a third consecutive World Cup, David has a huge role to play for his national team over the next couple of years.

Beating Chile is the perfect start, and the Canadians will look to follow it up with another home win when Peru visits Montreal this weekend. After that, Canada faces a rival, the United States, at Allianz Field in Minnesota.

David is looking to keep up his fine form for club and country, and he could be the man to watch in this international window.
