Celtic defender Alistair Johnston had an excellent 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada, helping his nation reach the Round of 16.

The full-back has become a real favourite at Celtic Park, but could he be on the move after a superb World Cup? Former Bhoys striker Chris Sutton seems to think the big clubs could be on red alert.

Johnston made the switch from CF Montreal to Glasgow in January 2023, going on to rack up over 120 league and cup appearances for the Hoops. He has also won over 60 caps for the Canada national team, scoring once.

Johnston’s high-intensity style perfectly suits Celtic, and the fans have fed off his energy over the past couple of seasons. Johnston has won three Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups, and two Scottish League Cups during his time at Celtic Park.

Sutton, who spent six years as a Celtic player, said, “At a time when the punters are desperate for news on incomings, the notion of more attention being placed onto their star names, such as Johnston, must send shivers.”

The ex-player turned pundit continued, “At the same time, Johnston looks settled and, if I’m Celtic, I’d be doing absolutely everything to make sure he’s perfectly happy where he is, and he goes nowhere.”

Johnston Shines in Canada’s Memorable World Cup

Before co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, Canada had previously lost six World Cup matches out of six. However, the Reds were determined to put on a show for their fans, and a draw in game one was followed up with a resounding 6-0 triumph against Qatar on matchday two.

The Canadians went on to reach the last 16 after a hard-fought victory over South Africa in the Round of 32. Canada’s journey came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Morocco, but it was an exceptional World Cup overall for Jesse Marsch and his troops.

Johnston played a crucial role, participating in every minute and emerging as one of Canada’s standout stars of the 2026 World Cup.
