Can Marsch Build on Excellent 2026 World Cup?
Having signed a long-term contract before a ball was kicked at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Jesse Marsch is sticking around. How far can Marsch take the Canada national team during his tenure?
Canada had a memorable World Cup as a co-host, reaching the knockout phase. There were so many positives to take from the tournament, and the national team is looking to build on its success.
Is Marsch the Right Man for the Job?
Despite being born in Wisconsin and playing for the United States national team, Marsch has become a big favourite with the Canadian fans. He has brought a real feel-good factor to the national soccer side, and his contract extension was the right move for all parties involved.
Before the 2026 tournament on North American soil, Canada had never even picked up a World Cup point. The nation had played six games on the grandest stage, losing all six fixtures.
The Reds’ first-ever point came in the opening game against Bosnia & Herzegovina. Cyle Larin levelled with 12 minutes remaining to give Canada a share of the spoils in Toronto.
The second game will go down in history as one of the greatest-ever soccer moments for the nation. Marsch’s men went up against Qatar in Vancouver, running out emphatic 6-0 winners.
It was a sensational way to win its first-ever World Cup match, with Jonathan David stealing the show with a hat-trick.
Canada was not done there, though, as a 1-0 victory over South Africa in California put the country through to the last 16. Despite a 3-0 loss to Morocco, the Canadians were one of the big winners of the 2026 World Cup.
Full Steam Ahead for 2030
Canada is now looking to book its place in a third successive World Cup. With Marsch firmly in the hot seat, the Reds will fancy their chances of qualifying.
CONCACAF qualifying will officially start in September 2027, so the head coach will already be putting plans in place. Canadian soccer is on the rise, and there is plenty more to come from Marsch’s troops.
